Vinyl wrap grill size

Featured Replies

Evening, looking for some help, I badly want to either wrap the chrome surround on the grill carbon fibre or black but haven't a clue what sort of size I need, I could measure it but I want enough to be safe, anybody know this from experience, much appreciated, can't seem to find any posts with a size

Do you have a tape measure?

Easiest and simple way :)

Yeah, I'm assuming I would cut a section out the middle and work it into the grill, bit confused if it's going to shrink with the heat hence why measuring it may be cutting fine

In my experience it is hard to do a good looking job with vinyl

Have you heard of plasti-dip?

The stuff is awesome, no prep required and if you don't like it you can peel it off!

Also way more chip resistant than paint lets say. I've ran them on chrome grilles for years and never had a stone chip

Pics of plastidipped octavia grill (same idea)

Finish is textured matt look and is honestly fool proof

Thanks for the picture, my mate done his vrs with plastidip and it looked very bubbly at first but it was a good finish, I would presume it would be more prone to stone chips?, is any prep work involved?, just make sure the chrome is clean etc?

No prep required at all

(Well apart from a clean)

Seperate chrome part

Give it a clean

Then 5/6 coats of plastidip and your good to go

I wrapped mine after I got fed up of stone chips in the matt finish I had before.. I'd already bought a 1 square metre roll as I was planning to wrap some other pieces aswell..

I wrapped it by covering the whole piece and then cutting the centre out as you said, so really you only need enough a sheet slightly bigger than the surround itslef. although maybe worth getting twice what you need incase It goes wrong on the first attempt..

A heatgun will come in very handy when trying to mould it round corners too..

Shot of mine..

Ok so I plastidipped the grille, don't like it at all, areas seem to peel very easy and I even laquered the dip afterwards and still doesn't seem as though it will last, I used a full tin leaving a day between coats so I'm not happy, I think I'm going to go down the vinyl wrap route or even try painting first and wrap it if the paint doesn't come out well, I need it perfect before I fit the new badge and it's annoying me lol

Black vinyl adhesive wrap from B&Q, about 8 quid a roll, enough to do it twice if you mess up the first time.

It's supposed to be used to tart kitchens up and stuff like that. Shiny not matte and is quite a good match for Black magic.

Something wrong there

People dip whole cars

In my experience it is more resistant to chips than factory paint

It's a rubber/ plastic based spray. It's more flexible than standard paint too. Lacquer probably didn't help

That looks good do you need to use a hairdryer to do this?

Yes I did to help it around the corners, not easy but not impossible.

It only needed very little heat to get it stretching.

I've never wrapped anything in my life is it doable or is it quite hard to do?

Doing my grill was the first time I wrapped anything, it is do able but can be a little frustrating.

You will need patience, but if I can do it anyone can.

Here's mine wrapped in 3m di-noc carbon that alot of others have used. DSC_0110_zps77d1093d.jpg

Was the first thing I have ever wrapped and didn't have a problem.

This is it on the website http://www.diy.com/nav/rooms/kitchens/kitchen-worktops/worktop_accessories/Sticky-Back-Plastic-Glossy-Black-11807524?skuId=12318230

In store I struggled to find it but it was hidden away on the end of an aisle just gotta search for it.

Went and got it and I had to redo it 3 times as I got in a right sticky mess the first time. You could probably do 30 grills with that roll though. Anyway it's done, not 100% it's got a few wrinkles along the bottom but I'm going to practise on my spare vents and gear surround then I'll redo it.
