Staggering. Crashed Merc. AMG

Featured Replies

Don't know which one it was, 2 door coupe thing, but very expensive new I guess.

In a Merc main dealer bodyshop today, and they had one in there being repaired. Well mullered front end job.

Only just got it apparently, and with just 230 miles on the clock, hit something very hard head on. All airbags deployed, engine shifted back, bent chassis rails, smashed front end of the engine etc etc.

Cost to repair?

£30,000.

Guess what?

Owner only has third party insurance and is therefore having to foot the bill himself!!!

I still can't actually get my head around this tbqh.

Funnily enough, the panel whacker i was talking to suggested that too!

I thought maybe the insurance company refused fully comp due to previous bad claims history, but surely, everything is purchasable for 'a price'?

If you vcan afford one of these, then surely the insurance would be mere chicken feed?

Can't imagine why else anyone spending that kind of wedge on a car would go and get third party insurance.

What a mistakea to makea!

I know. My though too.

I stood there with my mouth open in dis-belief.

Nice looking bit of kit it was.

Both front wings were hardly damaged btw, so must have been a tree ot lampost'y type shape

Young football player? They might have a bit behind them but I can imagine even a 17y/o not getting a cheap insurance quote on his Merc just because he's on the books at Liverpool.

I'm sure third party cover is only applicable to 5k max value vehicles.

Someone in the entertainment industry. Isn't fully comp difficult for them to get?

I know this is incredibly bad and illegal etc but what would stop the owner from not claiming that initial crash, phoning his insurance and switching to comprehensive cover for a small fee (maybe a biggish fee depending on factors), then phoning them up a week later claiming the crash and saving a shed load of money?

30k is a lot of money...

Someone is telling porky pies somewhere?

I thought fully comprehensive insurance is mandatory on a car of that value (insurance group)?

I think it is mandatory or a stipulation if you have finance outstanding, if you pay cash for it then it is your risk, I think.

I think you're right, in fact it is iirc.

Finance companies want full protection on what is in fairness, their vehicle until paid for

Never heard of fully comp being compulsory on high value cars tbh, I mean who's bothered if a loon pot with more money than sense writes his car off providing it legally belongs to the driver?

Many high value cars are insured TP only (or more likely Third Party Fire & Theft), particularly for younger drivers, or e.g. Professional Sportsmen, Entertainers or other high risk occupations.

Lets be honest, AMG's start at about £60k, or about 1/2 weeks pay for a Premier League footballer.  :@

If no-one will quote a reasonable Fully Comp premium, they might as well take the minimum available TPF&T cover (hardly anyone will still provide RTA cover only)

Lets face it, a £30,000 bill to them is the equivalent of a £500 excess to the likes of us.

I thought footballers weren't meant to hit the post.

Maybe driver wasn't the owner an was relying on his(hers?) "Driving other cars" extension. Many wrongly think this extension gives them the same cover as their own vehicle.

You learn something every day. Never realised that.

Automatically assumed that if anyone can afford such luxury, then paying the probably eye watering premium woud be mere chicken feed.

Found out the guy was of Pakistani origin, so probably not a prem footballer.

It's also well known that TPF&T policy's are rarely cheaper than FC as its thought that if you are in the market for a TPF&P policy you are likely to pose as a higher risk.

It is the difference between offered a quote and not though. Had this quite recently insuring the eldest- some companies that would entertain TPFT wouldn't quote for her on fully comp I guess based on potential risk to the insurer.

Actually the biggest reason that tpft is not much cheaper is that the risk is not much less.

Cost of fixing an owners car at 2, 5 or even £30k is small compared to a third party claim where someone has been serious injure, kills or incapacitated for life.

Never seen 'drug dealer' as a selectable option under occupation, do they have to use specialist brokers?
