Anyone done it?

Mine has decided it's going to try and eat it's own bearings!

Regretting swapping from my vr6 to this thing now!

It’s not a hard job to do .... but it is a thankless and very messy job!

Ball joint splitter and a largish soft faced hammer (or CV joint puller) plus the usual tools needed.

I took mine to the garage as it only cost £40 in labour. The cv boot also needs as vw tool to tighten up the boot clip super tight otherwise the boot keeps coming off. The cv joint kit is about £80

Did you supply the kit?

£40 is VERY cheap for such a nasty job .... I certainly wouldn’t entertain doing the job for that!  :giggle:

You can get the cv boot retaining clip tool from halfords, made by laser about 20 quids, it squeezes the tabs in and folds it over in the middle, although if you've found a garage that will do it for £40 then I'd go for that, it can turn into a nasty job especially if you can't get the joint off. Also cv crease is hideous stuff, on on your clothing you will never get rid of it and the smell stays in your nose for a week.

I'll be doing it myself, I'll look at the tool you mention tho..

Yes they would do.

I cant remember the exact size but you will need the correct socket to remove the hub nut/bolt as its not a normal hex nut its a multi spline type bolt. Easy enough job to do but as others said its a bit messy.

M14 if I recall.

if its the same as the diesel vrs 2007 The bolt holding the CV joint is a 27mm and the wishbone ball joint you can undo the 3 x 16mm nuts and separate it with out splitting the ball joint (and possible splitting the rubber) Not to sure about it there's a cir clip holding the CV joint on to the drive shaft, hope fully some 1 might know)

hope this helps

Old thread resurrection ..... Wont cable ties secure the boot tightly enough? I have used them on other cars in the past.

Cable ties are not a very good option, especially if using a genuine VW boot.
