Looking at an Estate tomorrow...

Featured Replies

Hi,

I used to own a Mk1 SLX Tdi up until four years ago and thought it was a great car. I moved away from a Skoda, but now I am in the market for an Estate so plan on looking at the Octavia.

I was originally thinking about a petrol, but in the years to come I shall be doing more miles so I'm now leaning more towards the 2.0 diesel in SE spec.

I'm looking forward to the test drive tomorrow, but was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to strike a deal. I'll be paying cash and part exchanging my current car.

Many thanks!

Oh no, will I even have to pretend I am also looking at a Mondeo? ;)

There's a few dealers close by, so hopefully one will give me a deal

With the 0% PCP you might find you can strike a better deal using the PCP. The dealer gets commission on the finance as we'll as the cars. Then just put the lump sum into a savings account and drip feed it back to pay off PCP.

Current discounts are around 5%.

I agree. I'm having a cheque to add to the savings account from my p\x less £1000 deposit, having 0% finance, 3 years service and around a 5% saving from list price.

I did have to shop around a bit for the saving as some dealers were offering no discount due to high demand and long waiting lists, they could sell them at pretty much full price without a problem   With the imminent price increases they may be even more reluctant to offer discounts.

The 'best deal' posts here are useful too but personally it'd read some of them with a little salt as I think that some people have not told the entire truth or they've found odd dealers who are happy to sell at losses. Tut tut tut

It'd be great to hear what you find out.

I recommend getting a quote for the spec you want through CarWow - the best offer will probably be from Alex Lawrie in Liverpool - then take that along to your dealers and see how close they can get.

You'll probably be offered a 6% discount if you use the 0% PCP offer and there are definitely local dealers out there willing to match or even beat this.

We're getting close to the end of a quarter, so if they have targets to meet, you might find you're in luck. It worked for me, and let us know how you get on.

Skovirg, I forgot that the PCP comes with 3 years servicing adding about another £500 saving against paying outright with cash.

As has been said play one off against another if you can, also end of month / quarter are good times to go in.  sometimes you can get better deals of a car that is already built just waiting for some one to buy it, plus quick delivery.

My sister (who cannot wait for a new car) bought a Nissan Duke that had already been built, she got a good deal and the car in a week.

Indeed. The 'free' servicing means that you know exactly what the car will cost each month and the £500 helps too!. I think it's sensible to play one off against the other. I did that but was then in a dilemma as the cheapest was with an arrogant soul and so my money went elsewhere. I really feel that this dealer will look after me and their communications have been grand so I'm happy with my choice despite it not being quite the cheapest (but not far off).

My car was 'ordered' to be their demonstrator but I took it over on November 12th as it was exactly what I wanted and I'll collect it in two weeks so again, I'm happy. Not exactly a week but quick enough I think.

Rumour has it that dealers have been instructed to be less generous with discounts due to the 3% rise in January but time will tell.  I guess it makes more sense for them to get commission on the higher, post January price and with the crazy quota system many dealers are not able to get orders official entered onto the system for a number of weeks. Consequently, I assume they'd absorb the increase.

Of course, this is all speculation and the only way to find out is to ask....I would check if the dealer has exceeded their quota or if they can enter it onto the system immediately though as I think that some dealers are accepting orders that they can not enter onto the build system as they have already purchased their quota. I understand that this is what causing some of the long delays.

Good luck and keep us informed please.

I was a cash buyer and part exchange too. Make it clear I all the dealers that you will be buying from the one that gives you the best deal and don't be afraid to tell them the other dealers you will be seeing.

Do your research on options and what you want.

Best of luck to you. I managed about 12% discount overall from my vrs but it took time leg work and a bit of hardball charm ;) so much so the owner / boss man came to talk to me and once we had finished negotiating asked me where I learnt to negotiate so hard and well! Hehehe in part tho I think luck was involved as they obviously really wanted the sale ;)

So, I didn't get to go today because my wife decided to give birth instead!

A couple of carwow quotes came through knocking it down from 21455 to 19754, so that shows promise.

Congratulation you two.

So the car negotiation is a distraction, to speed up birth. Better than running up and down stairs then.

Hope all is well!?

All fine thanks. Healthy baby boy.

I'll attempt the car again later in the week.
