DSG Clutch pack failure symptoms? Dealer response?

Featured Replies

1.8TSi DSG 7. Now at 14K miles, 19 months old, over the last few hundred miles I have noticed an occasional judder on 1st to 2nd change similar to when a manual with a conventional clutch has contaminated plates. Typically it is when the car is well warmed up and under some load (uphill or pulling out a junction) as oppose to gently moving off. There is no pattern or predictability to it. It does however, seem to match other descriptions of the problem on various forums including Briskoda. My car is going in for its first service at the end of the month and I have mentioned it to the service receptionist who added it to the booking but didn't elaborate or ask for further details or appear to have much understanding of what I'd just said really. My concern is around dealer response, obviously until I talk to a tech I won't know whether it'll be the act dumb that the problem even exists, the we'll need to charge to diagnose it sir or the decent thing of taking it and me seriously. All of these have been described on the various forums but does anyone have any recent experience of this problem?

Thanks

I had mine changed. They take block measurements with diags. Its a massive job!

First step is to confirm there is a judder and it's not normal. Best way for them/you to do this is get 2 or 3 technicians and yourself in the car and get it to do it. I usually find waiting til it shifts into second gear and then giving it a bit of throttle and turning the steering (like you were coming out of a junction) tends to get it to do it.

Then, because it's a DSG and VWAG holy grail, the techie will have to put it on the computer, get all the data out of the gearbox control unit, send it down to the Tech department at Milton Keynes and state they think X and Y is wrong with it, and the symptoms match those outlined in the relevant TPI for 7speed clutch pack failures.

They'll usually agree and they'll get you back in for the repair work.

Box off, old clutches out, then comes the annoying task of taking precise measurements, doing maths and working out what shims are needed to get the correct gaps between the clutches.

Just a bit tedious really. And the box is bloody heavy!

Thanks for the replies. I'll feed back when it has been in. It is frustrating now because I'm looking for it all the time I'm driving and I can feel it vary between:

not at all - absolutely smooth.

very gently - barely perceptible and I doubt a passenger would feel it

noticeable judder - quite infrequent and difficult to provoke deliberately.

I think the DSG is fantastic to use and I would have another tomorrow. VAG just seem to have a knack of not quite ironing out all the bugs from their new technologies before launching them. Fine if they acknowledge and fix them but a bit poor how they seem to go through a process of denying the problem, then when enough people start to shout worldwide, accepting the problem reluctantly with a patchy dealer response. This is my concern since my dealer changed hands and the new people are an unknown quantity. (Strangely, still answer the phone as Robert Eardley & Sons (Stoke) although I believe this site was bought a year or two back by a SEAT chain?)

Sounds similar to mine, they couldn't fix it after a dozen attempts so I gave up and sold it. Hope you have better luck than me!

Update: Just had its first service and I can't fault the dealers (Robert Eardley - Stoke owned by Barlow motors but retained the name). I spoke to the tech when I went to collect the car and he said they are aware of the issue and have done several clutch packs. They had taken it out and carried out the prescribed test procedure but hadn't detected the judder. They didn't seem to have put many miles on it so I suspect it may not have been warm enough but they said I can call in anytime it's doing it and if I let them know I'm on my way they'll come out with me so I can demonstrate it. Fair call really. As an aside, post service, the car was smoother than a smooth thing and I didn't detect any judder on my way home.

I got the problem with a Superb  elegance.

main dealer didn’t  take me seriously even with all my custom.

so took it to a German specialist who informed me within two hours that the clutch pack needs changing, in at moment £2200.

I don’t know much about other Skoda dealers but this dealer was less than helpful.

I live in the Cardiff area know what I mean

What else are they doing for £2,200 because replacing clutch packs costs nothing like that. Even a Main Dealer then having others do it because they will not do not charge that.   Well some might try it on.

Don’t believe it now it cost me £800 to replace propshaft rear rubber mount by main dealer.

As I said in earlier post they were not interested in finding out what the problem was.

Seems there’s more money to be made in regular servicing for little effort.

They are making loads of money with what they call servicing and is just oil and filter services and inspect and report.   What they are not interested much in is Servicing and maintenance like doing brakes. If you want new discs and pads they are happy, even if not needed they will tell you they are.  They are fitters and will do parts and consumables at inflated prices.   Repairs are not their thing.

I can only agree

When I had mount done I had to take the workshop manager out in car to show what was wrong then by a technician a week later.

Just unbelievable to be honest
