I bought some replacement buttons for my pre-FL multi-function steering wheel from eBay and fitted them today. They were cheap so I took a bit of a punt on a set of buttons that offer slightly different functionality - namely two phone answering buttons, voice control and light, instead of fast forward, rewind, mute and light.  

 

While the light and voice control buttons work fine, the two phone buttons do nothing.  I've checked with my genuine VCDS cable and there are no errors and there is not much in the way of coding options on the steering wheel (short coding but nothing which specifically relate to the buttons themselves), or the phone.  There is something in the phone relating to a three button keypad for cell phone preparation but this I think relates to a set up by the roof light on older cars and had no effect when I activated it anyway.

 

I realise it could be that the steering wheel controller needs to be different but I have a highline controller 1K0-953-549-BG (see http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Steering_Wheel_Control_Module_Versions) so I hoped to be ok, especially as Eddie told me that the buttons have their own logic.  Having said that there are lots of highline versions, so I realise this could be the issue. But is there something else I am missing or possibly something else I should check in VCDS please?

Just as a follow up, I've done a lot of searching and found some reference on other forums to long coding for the steering module, which does appear to code the buttons.  Mine only appears to have short coding, so what determines whether a module has the long or short coding options please?

ask Mike as I sold him my old 5No box and I think he has the older skoda mfsw

 

another option might be the Auto polar box

 

5K0 & 7P6 don't work with older vw Mfsw either, I fitted one of those polar boxes and it worked with it

Thanks, I presume those older 5N0 or 729B units work as they use DDP though?  The 5K0 which I have uses BAP and so as a result doesn't talk to maxidot in my pre FL, and now presumably not the steering wheel either?

 

What exactly does the auto polar box do?  Does it effectively take over the maxidot functions?
