Problems with early hub nuts?

Featured Replies

Just wondering if anything went t1ts up in Skoda UK with regards to the type of hubnuts used on the earlier Fabias. Obviously during the dsimantling of Fabia mark1, I had to get the hub nuts off. I was quite shocked by the flimsy, almost tin like nature of it.... "Was THIS all that was holding my hub on the driveshaft?" I thought.

Anyway, I was wiondering this as I picked up two new ones for my car and they were much more substantial and better built (about 4 times the weight too)

So, did anything happen to make Skoda change the design (or at least beef up) of the hub nut? This is a piccie of the old hub nut - not got one of the newer one sadly though.

Yes they did change them to the 12 sided nuts, but however they are still only done upto 50nm but now with an extra 90 degrees. Not to be re used. They dont need to be overtight as all they do is stop the driveshaft chattering. They dont hold the wheel bearing together like the Octavia for example as they have a pre assembled hub and bearing assembley.

Thanks. :)

Just wasn't sure if anyone's car had a serious issue with it, which is what led to them changing it.

I think scoobychris had problems with the early hub nuts.

The fault was a chattering on take up of drive iirc. Never had it on a Fabia but there was a mod to swap one for the other on the Audi A2.

Do you know what kind of tool is needed for taking out the old-fashioned nut?

I have an 19 imbus ranch but i think it's too small. Unfortunately I have no 20 to test.

I think scoobychris had problems with the early hub nuts.

I did? Can you jog my memory? :D

Chris

Ok, I took it out and replaced with the new version.

To take it out I made a key from a 22 one milled to 20.

It's incredible how thin the old nut is. The new one is much stronger.

The "clack" noise it's gone.
