Ps3 dead

Featured Replies

After six years it just farted and gave up

Red light flashing !!

Got the disc out but need data if possible. Any tricks I should know about ???

As far a replacement goes I have a 320 hdd that can go in so can I get away with buying a 12gb model and swapping the drive ???

Just seen a 500gb with GT6 which I already have and the last of us which I wouldn't play anyway so just trying to do this on the cheap really, that came in at £200

Not interested in a PS4.

Any helps would be great

TIA

Is it deffo just red and not yellow? If so, then the OS is corrupted and just needs reinstalling. FYI - you will lose all data using the below method (taken from Yahoo answers, but have done this a couple of times myself).

To do this, make sure the PS3 is turned off. Now hold the power button down until it turns off again. You should hear a few beeps. Repeat this again a second time. Third time, just simply turn on the PS3 and it should display a debug menu. (if it doesn't work, then either plug the hard drive into a pc and reformat it from there, or just use any laptop hard drive in your ps3 for now on.)

From this debug menu, select full reformat. After it's completed, you'll need to do the following. Go onto your PC and download the latest official update.

http://us.playstation.com/support/system...

After it's downloaded, you'll need to copy it to a usb flash drive (anything will work really, as long as it can be recognized as a mass storage device without installing anything, such as psp's, some mobile phones, hard drives, etc)

Inside the usb storage device, create 2 folders(it's case sensitive, so it must be in capitals).
First folder must be named
PS3
inside that folder, make another called
UPDATE

put the update in there. Now, plug it into the first usb port, and follow the on screen instructions.

I get the yellow light for about half a seocnd then a flashing red !!

Is it terminal ??

I had this last year with my fat PS3 after too many 24-hour races in GT5. I had a go at fixing it by getting a reflux kit for a few quid and using a heat gun, but it didn't work. So I got it repaired by an outfit on eBay for something like £25, which lasted a few weeks, but it was long enough for me to get the data off before it shat itself again and I considered it written off. There was no warning before it broke either time, which is annoying.

There's various "methods" of trying to fix a PS3, some involving hair dryers and cardboard boxes. But I'd get a pro to do it if you haven't got the skills or patience.

It's definately had it, it will need a full reflux as it's overheated and the graphics/processor chips will have lifted off the board. I did mine which lasted enough time to pull the save game data off the HDD but then went again. It's a new ps3 sadly.

You can't swap the HDD as it's locked to the ps3 its in so isn't readable any other way.

Dave give me a call and I can sort it for you. I did my sons old 40gb six times before I bought a new 12Gb and put 500Gb HDD in it.

You will be able to download all the data and you can reuse your old HDD but it will need to be reformatted etc as the 12Gb does this when it senses a new HDD.

If you do buy a new 12Gb version will also need to get the HDD cradle as it doesn't come with one.

Update.

Stripped it apart last night, easy enough, not much dust in there so don't think that was an issue. Has always been kept of the floor and we don't have carpets so it was never gonna be filthy in there.

It only gets light use really and was on watching a scooby doo DVD when it went.

I did have a few a goes on GT6 which I read a few weeks back has been killing the fat models, but even so I only played a few hours in total.

Had a phone call this morning from my mate he was playing GT6 last night when he crashed into a barrier the PS3 crapped out with the same fault as mine, looks like I'll be doing two !!!

Cover any plastic components in foil though.

The melting temperature of lead free solder is pretty high.

Fixed.

Piece of cake really, bought a new 12GB anyway, had a faff because I wanted my HDD out of the old one in the new so had to do the swap around onto a spare drive before I could pull the drive, did the ethernet cable transfer routine which worked fine.

One thing I did notice was how hot the fat is whilst just idling, they don't half pump out some heat, the superslim is virtually cold in comparison.

I'll keep the old one for the spare TV as it will come in handy, what's the bets it's last forever !!!

Nice one chaps :-)

Glad you got it fixed, it is a bit random how long they last after such a fix.

What was the fix?  Cooking it?

Strip down clean up thermal paste. Then blast with the heat gun.

about 2 mins warming the board and 30 secs on each chip.

I get the yellow light for about half a seocnd then a flashing red !!

Is it terminal ??

Yes, my first 60gb went exactly the same way but mine just took 13 months from new!!

I've still got it in the loft in its box, keep meaning to send it away to be fixed.

It also has my Wu tang clan killa bees CD stuck in it and I want it back. :D

My 250gb mark 2 is still working well but is just full of data so just bought a new 500gb version

which arrived this morning. Currently 4 hours into transferring the data from the mark 2 to

the mark 3 super slim. (Also I wanted a second PS3 for out in the conservatory so me and the Mrs

don't fight over the PS3. She can have netflix and I can play games next door now)

Amazon had the best deals on the 500gb model. Few different sets available at the same price.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-PlayStation-500GB-Console-Turismo/dp/B00GN61FB8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1388517572&sr=8-1&keywords=ps3+console

£199 delivered. Mine took 20 hours to arrive from ordering :o

You can get a blue console with two matching controllers if you don't fancy the games offered

for the same price. The new model is almost silent in operation btw. Very good but cheaper

looking with regard to build if I'm honest

I got Batman arkham origins and The last of us in my set but I wanted them anyway.

The cheapest way is if you buy the console with the two games (GT6 anniversary edition and the last of us)

and then ebay the games as new and sealed. You should get at least 25 quid each for them making

your upgrade around the 150 mark.

The 12 gb model is a waste of time in all honesty.

If you load the game data from GT6 and GTA5 then it will be full up.

Pathetic. Got more storage on my phone.

Yeah but the 12gb super slim (£129) can be upgraded, £10 caddy the £40 1tb hdd and your sorted for less than a 500gb super slim :-) plus the adding of a hdd doesn't effect the warranty as you don't actually open up the physical console, you just pop the removable side off and bobs your uncle!

Thats all well and good Dave but I'm a builder mate.

I don't understand all that stuff tbh. I just wanted to switch it on

and have a bit more storage. I was going to buy the 2 games anyway

so really allowing 25 quid I would have spent on those two

it only cost 150 really.

Data transfer is taking ages mind you :(

Nearly 250gb data going from the mark 2 to the mark 3.

Nearly 6 hours so far

Finally its done. :o

But it's like turning the old one on which is brill.

It's swapped everything over.

All the pics, all the music, everything :)

Oh and I answered before I read the rest of the thread so whoops :P

Like I say all done.

yeah the 12gb is useless but thats why I put my old drive in there. I did think about buying the 500 with the games but this worked out the same and I can't be arsed with eBay.

Gary I'm sure you could fix the old one yourself its really not that hard if you follow a boobtube video.

To remove the Wu Tang cd just press and hold the eject button and power up the ps3.

Although I'd be inclined to go a buy the 36 chambers instead. Thats is the only Wu Tang album as far as I'm concerned. The other 560 odd albums they did between them were poor relations.
