2MB ADSL - Is it worth

Featured Replies

Had an email from wanapoo (actually, they've been ok so far) saying I could upgrade to 2MB broadband for a one-off admin charge of

I went from 512kbit to 2048kbit/s and the difference was quite noticeable. In theory downloading (from a fast server) should be twice as fast with a 2Mbit connection but at the end of the day, it's your money :D I got upgraded for free :P:rofl:

Chris

depends on if they are increasing your monthy cost, most suppliers do charge extra per month so if they are not

Are they going to increase the monthly download cap?

No point if they aren't as you'll just hit the limit twice as fast.

My thoughts exactly - if I was going to upgrade I'd probably have to go up to their 30gb for an extra fiver a month. :thumbdwn: Might see if I can threaten them with migrating to someone else so they upgrade me for free. Fat chance I think

Good idea, play them off each other

Whether 2 is better than 1 still seems to be relevant to distance from the exchange and people using the line simultaneously, so I guess one can only monitor the difference in speed once one has it and is paying for it, which is a bit late then.

They did post some stats that said there seemed to be little point in paying for more than 2, since the average seemed to fall back to that or below however many megs were being advertised, since they are always "up to" rather than "you get".

As suggested, the 2's usually also offer ancillary benefits.

A one-off of

i know what your saying mo but what you also need to look at when getting a connection is things like the contention ratio as this will have a greater impact on your speed in the real world. no point in having a 100mb connection if your contention ratio is 1,000,000:1 (1,000,000 people all fighting for limited bandwidth)

I just wondered if the difference between 2MB & 1MB is REALLY noticeable? I gnerally find downloading at 110kb/s quite acceptable and never really thought' date=' "Oh, I wish this was 100% faster"

I recently had my free upgrade to 2meg from BT.As a speed comparison i can now download at 240 - 250 kb/s or more from a good server,better than the 50-60 kb/s i was gettin on 512k.
