2 lanes into 1

Featured Replies

Got a gaggle of them at various sets of traffic lights on the A41around here, and they are thoroughly hateful.

Cause no end of aggression trouble finger waving etc from the 'IT IS ACTUALLY MY ROAD' brigade if you DARE to use the outside lane (there to be used I thought) and then have to move back inwards inbetween cars on the former inside lane.

Not just me, as all the Ree's have suffered this nonsense, and others I've spoken to agree with me too.

Dread this manouver EVERY time, as it does cause much grief from probably 50% of other motorists.

Answer?

Que up with all the other obedient sheeple and leave the outer lane empty?

This is something I only ever seem to experience in the UK. I think it seems to stem from the general culture of polite queuing... But totally inappropriate in this case and not an efficient use of the roads. You are right they are wrong. The scum who intentionally block you getting back in should as punishment be castrated and this would be done at the road side if you vote for FUBAR!

You, Mr Furbar, will always be a most welcome passenger in my car. :D

Have the same thing coming in to work every single day. 2 lanes down to 1, the right hand lane being the filter lane, with a BIG ARROW showing this. :wall:

I can guarantee that every morning some twonk will either straddle both lanes approximately 100 yards from where the road turns to a single lane or will be in the left hand lane and creep as close to the driver in fronts bumper to prevent anyone using their brain (the RH lane) getting in.

There's 2 lanes, a big arrow and signposts, learn the rules of the road  :swear:

I think there was a thread on this not too long ago and IIRC James I mentioned the 'zipper' effect, which is how it should work but obviously some drivers are inconsiderate eejits and it nauses the whole process up.

Secondly, agree with Tom, drive a shed, as long as your in the right just keep going for it.

We have this near Bournemouth Hospital. It's a 3 into 2 then into 1. Council disaster of course. I don't go this way anymore due to the dangerous driving of everyone wanting to get to the front at all costs.

Used to be fine when it was a roundabout with 2 lanes both sides. Now it's a complex traffic light system.

The idiots that straddle both lanes or speed up down the inside of you and block your way in really boil my **** one day I'm going to lose it and just drive into them.

Sounds silly, but this.

We have a similar merge road at the top of a big hill and a car had broken down at the top after it merges. Amazingly everyone got into one lane and patiently crawled up the hill, leaving the outer totally empty. When I got to the merge at the top I had a lorry behind me, then some twunt in an Audi flew up the outer lane and quickly tried to merge between me and the lorry, he was having none of it and didn't open a gap, the audi still tried to force his way in, the lorry driver immediately called his bluff and did a little swerve at him - the audi recoiled, stopped and went mad and started waving his arms around as nobody else let him in.

Funniest thing I've ever witnessed on the road, I stuck my thumb out at the lorry driver for such a good show.

Not a problem on a m/c or a nippy car, you soon develope a good launch control system even driving a slug, I find auto or dsg gives you the edge you need, it's dog eat dog out there. The trick is to appear dis interested ie half a sleep but your actually coiled like a rattle snake to ready to strike.try a spot of drag racing. I think to venture into the outer lane you need to carefully formulate a forward driving plan ie highlight the gap you need to go into and your match your acceleration accordingly. You will still get some git closing the gap.

Ps I don't bother going into the outer lane, unless I am at the front.

Was there/ Ooops, must have missed it.

Feel free to merge (see what I did there?  :D )

Is this what they mean When two become one.?????

Absolutely.

Locals kicked off as it was initially just one lane, and the ques were becoming horrendous at rush hour.

The stretch concerned used to be 4 lanes, and the traffic flowed beautifully, but this was before the introduction of pedestrian refuges and cycle lanes, both of which you rarely seen being used.   :wall:

Go to France and watch they do it.

Use both lanes right to the end and merge in turn.

Job done.

As above, it's really easy, use both lanes and merge in turn.

It's so simple. Sometimes I'm embarrassed to be British when you see how the exact same manoeuvres are completed in mainland Europe.

Please don't give in and do this.

You are right and the people sitting in lane one are sheep and deserve to queue.

It was a while ago now, plenty of opportunity for another!

This is one 'absurd driver mentality' that really boils my p**s!

Precisely, merge in turn, but we are just not capable of doing this. Especially if you drive a BMW, Audi or white van. Spotty for stereotyping things but this is generally what happens. People who are too impatient/up themselves who really don't care about you or I.

Someone mentioned those in the inside lane (the one being merged into) not creating room by closing the gap between them and the car in front, well exactly the same happens with those I the outer lane by more than one car trying to force its way into the same gap.

I normally allow a car to close in front of me - I'm in no hurry to have an accident. Especially if my lane is blocked ahead.

Unless they try forcing their way in as if it's their god given right, this really ****es me off. Especially those that are in the wrong lane just to get 4 or 5 cars ahead and then demand to be let in.

One thing that does annoy me is rude drivers - you stop to allow someone to pull out and they don't say "thanks" - not a hand wave, flash of lights, hazards or anything - a simple smile as they pull out in front of you is all it takes.

I always drop my window and give a thank-you wave to the car behind if they let me out.

Is this what they mean When two become one.?????

The spice girls IIRC?

Zipperl effect Works Fine over Here in Germany it's only us Brits that que !!!! First Time i Drove down the Autobahn and joined the que of Traffic 50 Meters Or so before it Became One lane she went mental !!! I have the right of Way i explained you might wanna que for half an Hour Not me i indicated right and pulled into a Space a quick Thanks to the old dear behind and off we went on our way, result Wife no longer ques in traffic:-)

I love hanging out in the fast lane when the lanes reduce

Get a whole load of signs and horns

Simple buy a really fast car and look at them in your rear view mirror. This is what I do and I never have a problem.

It's true - I purposefully let a TVR tuscan out once because I knew a tunnel was coming up and wanted to hear that exhaust note, and oh did it deliver!

That's somewhere in the highway code right?

I best not give my thoughts on the Bournemouth Area roads planning department.

I seem to remember hearing in a local paper that one of the people responsible for a few disaster roundabouts doesn't drive himself and blamed motorists for not being able to drive.

This is something I only ever seem to experience in the UK. I think it seems to stem from the general culture of polite queuing...

You are spot on with that observation;

To the left is the A518 route into town. The amount of people who queue through the yellow box to go up there (and subsequently block the roundabout) is untrue.  I've never had a problem with merging in when i use the right hand lane but so few do, its almost like there's some sort of force field preventing folk from using it.
