eBay..why is it so hard?

Featured Replies

So I 'sold' my 740i on Monday. Bloke said he could pick up Thursday and he'd let me know. Paid me a £100 deposit and left it at that. Tried all day today to contact him to confirm tomorrow and nothing. Until now. Can't do tomorrow but Monday although if I will take the car somewhere closer to him he might be able to do earlier. I can't do that as I've got no one to drive with me so I can get back to my car.

Hacks me off as I've taken a day off work and swapped stuff around only to be let down.

You have my sympathies, but this seems to be par for the course with cheaper cars on eBay. I've sold a few and certainly recall the majority were anything but straight forward - if nothing else at least you've got £100 for your trouble!!

Best of luck and hope everything goes smoothly on Monday

Try Gumtree next time, free to list AFAIK. TBH I'd never sell or buy a car on ebay, too many scams/ scam artists plus ebay want a slice.

eBay is still better then Gumtree

I advertised a car on Gumtree in the past and received about 20 phone calls per hour making stupid offers and people arranging to come and view the car but not turning up, or turning up and requesting to test drive themselves, at least with eBay you can take a deposit and have some sort of protection from time wasters that like to go the extra mile and actually pay a deposit.

Isn't the meet me somewhere part of a scam to steal a car with keys?

If they're my mucking you about raise a report with eBay and move on. I've stopped wasting time with buyers.

Do not change your plans for other people.

Unless you like people you don't know dictating your life.

He has bought it from you without confirming when you are available.

If you are reasonable he'll have to come when you aren't working.

I'd tell him if he doesn't come by the weekend your re listing it. And keep the £100!

Be very, VERY wary of Gumtree. Their lack of credential taking leaves them the playground of the scumbag and villain, there's little if any comeback should things head south.

As BF says he fits in with you not vice versa and whatever you do don't meet anywhere other than on familiar turf. I've bought cars on Ebay and have had no trouble travelling to/ meeting with the vendor to collect. Its not rocket science and certainly not as difficult as this bozo is making out.

A guy that lives a few roads away from me put a car up on Gumtree a few years back, 2 guys arrived to view it and he took them for a quick test drive around the block, he was pushed out of the moving car as he went around the corner and they drove off

There are scammers and scumbags everywhere.....eBay, gumtree, Autotrader, Pistonheads etc etc.

My shackles would already be highly raised with this situation. Be careful dealing with someone you have never met, away from home turf.

Good luck

If his genuine he will pick the car up on your terms, from your house and nowhere else.

A point to take note of would, if possible, try to get him to pay either directly in to your bank or at least a bankers draft.

If he insists on cash, try and do it as early in the day as possible. There was a story a few years back that a fella sold his car (can't remember what it was but it was to the tune of about £20k), bloke picked it up in the evening and paid cash. A few hours later the house was broken in to and the £20k gone! Call me suspicious but if it was nothing to do with the buyer then the chap has had some serious bad luck but the only person to have known about the cash would have been the buyer, it was after 5 o'clock so he couldn't get down the bank to pay it in and at a guess had no other choice than to keep it at home.

It was probably a couple of oiks that did the deed for a percentage of the money and the poor chap is then without a car or the money but has sold the car legitimately as well.

On YOUR terms or keep his £100.

Id consider meeting half way for value of car though, that deposit would now be delivery and full balance still outstanding (50 mile cap). A Police station is a good one to use, you could 'suggest' you are working there that day perhaps.

If you are persuaded to meat in the middle make it a car park with plenty of CCTV cameras or somewhere where there is one anyway, just make sure he's on it as well as the changeover then if you do get done over you can say where you met him and thy'll see who it is from the footage.

Isn't this the car that was up for £1000, nobody is really going to try anything for a car of that value.

To answer the original question, ebay is hard because ebay have made it easy for buyers to be dickheads wihout any comeback.

I sold the bird's Audi A3 last year. Some plum from Norfolk made me an acceptable offer and then started asking questions about the car. Bearing in mind it was a £600, 186000 mile car and advertised as such, I could see where it was going.

Long story short, he eventually made a 6 hour train journey and came and picked the car up. He then broke it a week later and had the cheek to leave me neutral feedback. He then relisted the car on ebay using my photos and ebay couldn't give even a little monkey.

You are assuming there are sections of society that wouldn't steal the peanuts out of poo. Interweb land is full of them.

Ebay has its idiots,a friend of mine had his car up for sale, bloke wins the auction,my pal trys & trys to get hold of him, when he finally gets in touch he says he doesnt want to pay the winning price & offers less money.............muppets!

When you report a non paying bidder they have access to any messages, or if text or email just send them a copy.

Doesn't get cash in your bank or the item out of your way though. :(

I sell on eBay and buyers now get away with bloody murder ! eBay has become far too lenient towards buyers IMO
