Rear wiper frequency

Featured Replies

After a trip up and down the M3 yesterday when the weather was atrocious with heavy rain and spray on the rear screen I wondered; can the frequency of the rear wiper be altered to wipe more often? I like to keep an eye on what's behind as well as what's in front and found the frequency didn't keep the screen clear as much as I'd like.

I took a quick look in the VCDS coding thread but it seems to only mention 'tear drop' wipe (whatever that is :wonder:  ) and reverse wipe.

Thanks in advance.

Lee.

Hi Lee,

On mine if I have Rear Wiper activated it corresponds with what my Front Wipers are doing,

ie: Intermittent,Slow,Fast.

But you cannot control the Rear wiper by itself, except for intermittent wipe.

Hope this answers your query.

OK, I'll try adjusting that, thanks. Does that only work if the wipers are set to auto (rain sensing wipers)?

No auto wipers on mine Lee.

If the front wipers are on, intermittent or full, when selecting reverse, the rear will wipe once.

Sometimes it will wipe once when reverse is selected as the first gear after starting the engine ? I don't get that one?

If driving forwards with intermittent wipers, the rear will not wipe unless I switch it on.

If the front wipers are on full then the rear automatically wipes intermittently if driving over 30? Km/h, whether it is switched on or not.

I'm not sure what it does if switched on when front wipers on full, as I've never done it.

With all this wet stuff I suppose it's a good time to find out?

Reading the manual for the FL (and I reckon it's the same on pre-FL in my experience):

Front wipers on 'low speed' or 'high speed', the rear wiper wipes every 30 or 10 secs respectively.

Front wipers on 'auto/intermittent', the rear wiper only wipes (as above intervals) when the fronts are wiping all the time.

Auto rear wiping is activated/deactivated via MAXIDOT.

One click forwards on the wiper control arm means constant intermittent (if that makes sense) action by the rear wiper.

Thanks, Clive and Aerofurb. I'll have a play again tomorrow, not looked at the forecast but no doubt more :rain: to come :dull:

This made me chuckle to my self . Lee in the UK, :rain:  where we get rain 360 days a year   :rain: , asked a question about wipers and it was answered by a Gobmax who lives in Australia :sun:   where it rains once every 35 years   :sun:
