Rapid clicking from boot area

Featured Replies

When driving on longer journeys, laden or light, usually on dual carriageway or motorway, I hear a rapid clicking noise for about 4 seconds at a time coming from the boot area of my Yeti, like a small air compressor in the distance.   I have the spare wheel rather than the compressor & gunk.   It repeats every 10 minutes for so.  Anyone any ideas what this might be, please?  It's not a loud sound, but still audible even when the boot is full of stuff.

Is it not interference from your mobile phone over the rear speakers as it polls different cells?

Sounds familiar.

Interesting suggestion - I'll try turning it off to see what happens.  Thank you.

Any joy with this Zib?

I'm familiar with the sound you describe, it's not annoying/worring but would be interested to know what it was!

I had a similar noise many years ago on a golf gti and that was the fuel pump.

Driving with the ICE turned off, I still get the sound, so I don't think it is that.  It'll be a few days before I can drive with phone turned off as well to prove definitively.  Also, it doesn't sound like the mobile phone interference I get when I put one too close to a loudspeaker.

Thank you.  Did you have to get the fuel pump replaced, or did it continue to work?

It was replaced, twice actually, there was a recall for the fuel pump so I took the car in and they fitted one of the faulty batch which was the one that made this noise, from noise to failure was about 40 miles I just managed to limp to the garage.

I have an annoying intermittent rattle from the back of the car which might be what you are hearing.

It took me an absolute age to track down the source and I'm not quite sure what made me check but it turns out to be the boot catch!

Grab the boot handle (with the car locked) and push and pull the lid.  If you hear a slight knock that is possibly your noise, the free play between the lock post and catch mechanism.  Mine is going in on Friday to be sorted.
