Removing steering wheel airbag

Featured Replies

I am sure there is simply a nack to it....

Can someone please enlighten me.  I see holes on the back and have had a root around.  Cannot find anything to lever to unclip airbag.

Thanks. :D

Simples dude.

Turn wheel 90' and get a long flat screwdriver and place it in the steering wheel hole. You need to kinda push down with screw driver against the spring catch to release it. It is fiddly first few times then you get brave and a bit more rough with it. Turn wheel and do other side then it will pop out be careful of the wires.

So insert, then push down?  No levering required?

I could feel the end of the screwdriver I was using going over the pin and hitting what felt like the metal back of the airbag.  I have the battery off so not concerned about triggering them :D

Lever the screwdriver from side to side, while lightly pulling the air bag & you should feel it pop out.

Thanks.  I think removing the cluster will help to get a proper screwdriver in there.  The cluster really restricts the size of cluster,  Also, I was using a flatty when it looks like a pozi screwdriver is best.

I've changed the 3 spoke wheel a few times & never had to remove the cluster. Always used a pozi, but I don't think it really matters.

Looks to be basically the same as the mkII. If you twist the steering through 90° then use a mirror to look in the hole you can see the little wire thing you need to move out of the way. Just watch out that when you do the other side the first one doesn't latch again.

I haven't removed the clusters before on the mkII and use a short flat head screwdriver, but I pull the steering column all the way out first.
