solid flywheel on octavia 1.6 cr tdi

Featured Replies

Hi could anyone tell me please is it ok to fit solid flywhhel on 2011 octavia 1.6 cr tdi. ive been told its not advisable to fit solid flywheels on commonrail engines is this true

My understanding is that the purpose of a dual-mass flywheel (DMF) is to reduce high-frequency torsional vibration in the drive train, by acting as a torsional damper. Such vibrations are not normally apparent to the occupants but can increase the stress and wear in the gearbox and the rest of the drive train. The combustion process generates these vibratons, which tend to be worse with diesels. It is cheaper to fit a DMF than bigger, stronger gearbox components. So substituting a sold flywheel MAY shorten the life of the gearbox and other drivetrain components. (If I've got this wrong, I trust someone will correct me!)
