Head unit removal and install

Featured Replies

Hi. I just purchased Skoda Octavia SDi classic. I wanted to change the MS303 (I think it's the original cassette player with the car) to Alpine headunit, but I have no idea how to remove and install. If anybody could help me with it, it would be great. And also if I wanted to get a Manual of the car (it came without), who should I call? suffering...

manual - stealer can supply these, some may charge

stereo - try some kenwood stereo keys, these normally work. do you already have a stereo to fit?? if not then ask the shop nicely if they can help as most places are pretty good in my experience.

I think I spotted a manual on Ebay. So that's all set! I've already bought Alpine CDA 9812RB as it has 60wt times 4. I hope it's not too complicated. There's a shop down my street and they charge 30 pound per hour.. dunno if it's worth it and if fitting is that difficult.

I was once told that Halfrauds will fit radios that are not supplied by them - understand standard charge is

Halfrauds don't unless you purchase from them, sometimes its free (if it's an offer) sometimes its

hmm.. Thanks for all the advice. I finally bought Alpine cda 812RB, but I need to buy a pair of rear speaker to do it justice. Any suggestions? or I could maybe just buy an alpine rear speakers.

Depends how much you want to spend really?

Something better than standard?

Or something really good?

A set of Alpine SPE-1302's would probably do a good job :)

PM me if you want a price on them or anything else car audio ;)

Paying loads for rear speakers is a crime. Obviously don't for cheap crap but it's only for some rear fill. I remember my first pair of 6x9's mounted in my rear shelf. I thought they were the the dogs bol**cks and was impressed with the bass. I've wised up since then.

Do yourself a favour and upgrade the front speakers with some decent matched components. Spend the change on some rear speakers if you really want to and then start saving for a sub with an amp to run it. Go on, your Alpine Head Unit deserves it.

I am finding it impossible to fit my new stereo. It's more difficult than I thought. I fit everything that I think should be fit, but the light keeps coming on and off repeatedly. If I'm replacing from MS303 to Alpine CDA 9812, do I have to rewire the whole stereo with the new ISO that has come with the Alpine unit? Or Can I just use the ISO that's already sticking from the back? And where and how should I connect the black ground wire thingy and how does the 20amp box connect to the fuse box? Or am I completely confused here? HELP!! anyway, I don't have manual either, if someone could help me step and step, I would really appreciate it! Oh and how do you take the globe box off the car?

Thanks!

Easy things first, the glovebox is just held in by 5 torx head screws.

Open the glovebox and you'll see three along the top edge.

And then with the glovebox closed, underneath it in either corner there are two more.

Then just slide it towards yourself, but not too far as you have to dis-connect the glovebox light to get it fully out.

As for the headunit, you shouldn't have to re-wire a thing (unless it's one of the new high spec Alpine heaunits that says it's need a connection direct to the battery?)!

There should be a set of Alpine leads that plug into the back of the headunit, the other end of which should accept the power and speaker blocks you already have in the car that were connected to the standard stereo.

It should be a simple plug and play.

AH HAHAHA!!

Thank you very much! I know it should be easier than what I did. Does not mean that it's set up yet, but it has got one of those connector that you must connect to a battery and also another one to fusebox. that's why I'm completely lost.

Also, I have feeling that the old MS 303 used less Ampage than this one because it had 10amp compared to 20amp which I think u need for this headunit. Anyway I'll try to take off the glovebox and have a look see.

I had an american imported alpine quite a few years back and that said to connect directly to the fusebox/battery.

I ignored this and ran it from the standard wiring with no problems, however it was only a slave unit (no internal amp) so it didn't need much power anyway!
