Why so many silver cars?

Featured Replies

They're everywhere. I drive 80 miles a day (round trip to work and back) and it sometimes seems as if two out of every three cars registered in the last 3 years or so are silver. I have nothing against silver as a car colour (apart from the fact that you'll never find it again in a car park) but just can't fathom how silver suddenly became so very trendy...

in a word or two ............Mercedes and BMW

my personal theory is that silver actually ages quite well...... doesn't dull much, and doesn't show stone chips like some other colours do... Hence... they look 'smarter' for longer, and as no-one can really dislike silver THAT much, they tend to have better resale value (says someone who has never owned a silver car in her life ;) )

Its silver police cars that p me off, they just blend in. Bring back the white ones, could spot them a mile off.

I've read reports that there are now so many silver cars that resale values are actually lower on them compared to other colours.

I'd actually thought Merc and Porsche, but you're right; used to be a lot of silver BMWs too. Wasn't silver the German's racing colour, in the same way that we had British Racing Green and the Italians had red?

Good point on the paint chips. I have to say tha the huge number of silver cars on the road put me off getting my new one in silver...

well I guess this is possible too... I know I purposefully AVOID silver cos there are just too many of em!!

Definately a German inspired trend. I bought mine in silver simply because the car looks good , and all the other Fab vrs's i had seen up to that point were black. I really wanted yellow, but my old sensible side said no. My wifes car is silver, my old car was silver, and my aunties car is silver. Baa Baa.:o

Mine's yellow..........Yellow is the new silver...and red.....and black :)

Silver is certainly common as muck..mine is silver but I do like it. :)

White, the scourge of dealers is making a comeback apparently

A picture of the new golf GTI in white was published.I have to say it looked the bees knees

Silver is just plain practical that's the reason. You can't see dirt and dust, scracthes etc. in a silver colour as easily as in darker colours. Also black car for example tends to be hot in warm weather so you have to blast aircon at max longer to get the car cool.. anyway I still think black looks the best when properly taken care of

ur all annoyed because u jst cant get ur vRS in blue magic :D:D

Pah; I could fit a VRS in the boot of my Fabia Estate*

*obviously not true

Silver WAS thee colour to have 2 to 3 years ago. Now the trend is Black

mines silver but only because i thought the vRS looked better in that colour... oh and i always wanted a silver car with tinted windows :o

I agree that there is too many silver cars about. I preferred something a bit different, Beige bought me over. The resale values are lower for beige but hey-ho.

When I was looking at new cars, i noticed that some manufacturers now seem to have several versions of silver in their line up.

Things like..... Iron Grey, Gun Metal, Moonstone as well as plain old sliver!

Which brings me onto another (slightly off-topic) point.

Does someone actually get paid to sit there thinking of names for colours.

WTF is Corrida Red. I would have been quite happy with "Red" or even "Bright Red" if I was being picky.

And whats Magic about Black?

Do we need a "Most Stupid Name for a Paint Colour" thread?

"Corrida" red is a less posh version of "Corridoor" red.

And the black paint is made from the middle sections of Paul Daniels' old wands, I imagine.
