Real world example of aiming headlights please......

A bit of back ground.....

My Octavia vRS turns 3 on Monday and had its first MoT about 2 weeks ago.

I've always thought the (xenon) headlights were excellent, but on driving the car at night after the MoT, there was a noticeable gap between the xenon dipped lights and halogen main beam. On driving on just dipped lights, the cut off on the road seemed very close to the car.

The garage have re checked the lights and describe them as "in spec", but i still feel the lights are too low.

I don't have vcds, so cant play with the lights myself, so it's back to the garage. I was trying to find out what consitutes the lights being high, but the only "official" information relates to using a collector, and 1% (i think) below horizontal is imposible for me to check.

So the question is, can somebody explain how i can look at where the light falls on the ground (or on a wall in front of the car) and decide if the lights are too high? It seems to me (simplistically) if there's a distinct line of light/dark in front of the car i should be able to come up with something

Hope that all makes sense, and thanks in advance.

I suppose an alternative may be for somebody who has xenons (that have not been adjusted after they left the factory) to measure how far the cutoff is from the front of the car.
