fuel gauge faulty

Featured Replies

hello,

I have a 2001 fabia 1.9tdi pd 100bhp. One month ago I noticed that the fuel gauge stopped being consistent as it used to be. I always fill up the car, drive untill its nearly empty and fill up again. The gauge was always very accurate however now it seems to be stuck on full for a long time then drops down to 50% and stays there. The miles count down counter on the computer doesn't seem to be accurate either. When the gauge is on 50% it says I can do 280 miles, when I fill the car up it slowly goes up to 450 miles, and slowly I mean a few days.

I check the plugs under the rear seat and everything seems to be fine. I read some post on the internet and it is recommended to check the earth. How do I check it? Where are the wires from the sender going to? I'd like to check the other end too. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the fuel gauge?

Regards,

Simon

Haynes shows the sender as a variable resistor which ( I suspect will go lower resistance wise  as the fuel level rises). That along with tank earth might be worth a look. Guage & wiring should be easy to test . Haynes diagram shows two wires to sender ( Purple with black tracer ) from instrument cluster to sensor, and Brown with white tracer to earth. Old test methods involved removing wire from sensor and looking for empty indication, then earth sensor output( purple/black) and guage should read full . It might be worth looking to see if you can remove the sender unit and look for signs of corrosion and service if possible or replace. From my observations the distance estimated is computed on last 50 miles of driving and fuel in tank .
