Coloured Matched Paint

Featured Replies

Morning all- just need to sort out some rust on  my arches and I was wondering what paint people have been using? It's diamond silver so reckon it's worth getting some made up or just use some of halfrauds pre made? Only little bits so no need for the compressor, a rattle can will do on this one.

these cars are around that long you should be able to get a proper colour matched rattle can.

Get a decent quality one though, piece of mind it will last...

It'll be getting a decent clear coat after painting up I'm just more concerned the paint matches. Grey undercoat should be fine on it as well with the colour. Means doing all 4 corners and a spot on the boot handle costs me 20 quid opposed to 250 at a bodyshop

Have you got a pic of the problem area?

Unless you have a heated garage too, ambient air temp is too cold :)

it's just on the rear arch from stone chips over the years. Not deep or anything, just needs tripping back, treated and repainted and sealed. The boot one is a blemish under the right side of the handle. I'll pop some pics up later as I have to go and fix the new phone A frame hard point in a bit

Here's pic of the passenger side which is the worst by a long way, the others are just speccles where as this is proper rust. Quite bad but will be fine for a plastic steel repair sanded down to match

No worries mate, it's way easier to do this stuff than most think, just matter of getting the area properly prepared first by getting the rust off with wire brush and then sanded (do a good 2 cm around the the rust as well) get some good rust dissolver in there and treat the metal if needed then (with this one) some filler or plastic steel (depending on the size of damage), that then needs to be sanded down to match the body then primed and rubbed down, painted and rubbed and then lacquered, rubbed down and finally polished. It's something that just takes some time and some patience to get right but you can get everything you need from halfords for probably 20 or 25 that'll do all 4 arches if they aren't too bad

oh- and mask off EVERYTHING with tape and sheets!!! Paint does and will go everywhere and it'llo save you clay barring the car to get the overspray off

Be careful there's at least 3 shades of that silver!! I made that mistake mines a dark colour than the standard one

Aye, I know BMW also do an Arctic SIlver but I hope there's only one VAG shade lol

  • Author

I keep saying Arctic silver when it's actually Diamond Silver- gotta love the joys of old age lol

A dremel might be useful there.

You could slap some mudflaps over the repair too to disguise it.

  • Author

Aye, dremels are awesome for everything but where it is it's pretty easy access so wire brush and sanding by hand will work but the little magic dremel will speed it up no end

I'll see what it's liked after I've lacquered it and rubbed it down, if it's not that well blended then mud flaps it'll be- good thinking batman

And itll stop further abrasion from stones etc.
