User generated content and ratings web site

Featured Replies

Setting up an informal "app swap club", and I've got this idea which I'm struggling to realise due to lack of knowledge in this area.

I want people to be able to come to a website and suggest a useful tool/app/whatever and give it a rating.

This should go into a database.

Others can view the current content of the database, via a set of web page based filters that define what they see ( ie by genre, price etc).

They see the list, along with the rating and comment/description

They should then be able to click on one and add their own rating and comment to it.,,,,,

Over time, the "view" pages should reflect an average rating, based on all the ratings held in the database for a given tool/app/whatever.

For examples, think IMDB, Apple App store, etc........

So I'm thinking I need two databases, a web server, a stack mad HTML programmers and a fat wallet.

What I actually have is no budget, access to a web server, a wordpress site  myself and a graduate, and both of us seem to lack the requisite skills (though the graduate seems to be competent, as a computer games design student with C sharp skills etc)

Any guidance or end-to-end solutions that would do the job reasonably well?

Or something forum based and reskinned?

Forum might be too much admin.

It turns out that another arms of my employer has a wordpress installation, which someone has an account with that allows all sorts of free plugins to be downloaded, one of which appears to offer the ratings element.

Web Chief of staff was remarkably cagey about giving us the same sort of account, but if they've done it for one, they can do it for me too.

No point having this stuff and then keeping it quiet.......just need to keep on the pressure to get it now!

Wordpress is really easy, and you can find plenty of cheap themes too. As it is a common type of CMS you do need to keep the updates on track, and whatever you do change the username from the default 'admin' as soon as you can. So many Wordpress sites get hacked because of this simple error.
