Looking for a Fabia for the missus.

Due to a new job for me our Octavia will be solely for my use due do working away during the week with the new job. I need to get the wife a car to use while i am away.

I am considering a Fabia Mk1. Possibly an estate. Hope to get something for around £3k ish.

 

My dilemma is should i get her petrol or diesel. She will mainly be doing short journeys however occasionally maybe a three hour motorway trip would be called for.

 

Certainly want something with A/C and remote c/l too but apart from that she isn't fussed about having lots of toys. 

 

So i am looking for peoples advice please on which way to go and what i should be looking for when purchasing.

1.9 TDI 100. The petrols of that era from VW were pretty crap outside bellow the 1.8 turbo, but they didn't fit that to a Fabia. 

I notice that i may be able to get another Octy for the same sort of price. Shouldi be concerned for one with 100 - 150k miles on the clock?

Economy of running high miler cars I'd say depends on how much you can do yourself. You could end up with one that needs lots of consumable parts or worn parts replacing and labour will add up.

Providing the engine has been looked after, mileage shouldn't be an issue :)

Off to see a Fabia Mk2 1.4TDi tomorrow. 2008 model, estate. Got 90k on clock but one owner full main dealer service history and cambelt done. Anything i should be looking specifically for on something like this? Its a private sale and is MOT'd til May. Surely there cant be too much wrong with this sort of car. I am not going to be able to drive it as i am not getting insurance for every thing we go and have a look at so will be getting the seller to take me for a trip in it.

If low mileage and short journeys is what she'll do most of then I'd go petrol all day long. You only do an occasional long journey then a petrol will still gladly do it but not as economically.

The small petrols won't have DMFs, turbos or EGR valves to go wrong.

You should be able get a nice 1.2 (which arguably better than the 1.4) with Bells and whistles and low mileage for £3k

Thanks for the replies. We have an Octavia 1.6 TDi at the moment which i chose over a petrol variant because i prefer the way it drives (and the £30 a yr road tax). lol

 

It has done a mixture of driving during the 18 months of having it and its been great. we do do some short trips in it but it also gets the odd decent run every week or two.

 

I think if we can get an oil burner for our budget then thats the way we will probably go tbh. 

Bought the 1.4 TDi estate we looked at today. 2008 Fabia 1 1.4 TDi. 90k on clock one lady owner fsh. Needs brake pads and a service plus a new reversing light switch. £3250. I didnt think that was too bad. Needs a good clean in and out too.

Good choice. I've driven both the 1.2na and the 1.4tdi and there is no comparison. The 1.2 is slower than an asthmatic ant and noisy and uneconomical. The tdi is simple and bullet proof with good mpg.

The Fabia 1.4 TDI in 80bhp tune is a very eager and economical little engine with a nice throaty three pot growl when wound up. It is very economical too, on the courtesy car I had I managed to get 50 mpg despite driving it hard (something that the sound of a three cylinder encourages you to do), at high revs you can imagine, allllmost, that it is a 911 or a Triumph Trident bike  lol :p
