Yeti Winter Tyres - Can I use 225/55 R16?

Featured Replies

Hi,

It appears that this may have been covered before and maybe I'm being a bit thick!

I live in Germany where I must have winter tyres fitted.  I have been offered a set of 225/55 R16 tyres on nice alloys.

Can I use them and will they fit?

Hope someone can help soon!!

Thanks in advance.

Not an approved size and it also depends on the rim width and off-set

However they are similar in diameter to the standard 225/50 R17, so if the rims have the correct bolt pattern, spigot hole and are around a 7J width and an offset of ET45 they may work.

Plumber,

Many thanks for the quick response.  I have got the following pictures from the person with the wheels and tyres - do you think I can use them?

nickguzzi,

Not sure really which is why I am asking.  Won't be tested for another couple of years yet though.

Rim size is OK but theres nothing clarifying the stud spacing or spigot size which has to be 5x112 and 57mm.

What where they fitted to previously :wonder:

Regard German law on using the non approved tyre size I cannot advise there.

They came off a 2011 Seat Leon

The rims should fit then as they use the same mounting.

So really it's down to you deciding if your happy running on a non approved tyre size until they wear out at 4mm.

Alternatively get the rims and fleebay the tyres and replace with the correct 215/60 or 205/55 16" tyres.

Plumber,

Once again many thanks.  When you say non-approved does that mean that there is any real risk involved?

Sorry but is 4mm the UK wear limit.  It's 1.6mm here I was told.

There are specification pedants -some on this forum-who may be outraged. No "real risk" though :drunk:

4mm is the max wear limit for a winter tyre to remain effective; they have additional 4mm wear bars.

Risks; local laws and insurance are about it.

Oh forgot one final thing load rating of the tyre for a 4x4 Yeti can be no less than 93/94
