HID Kit & radio interference

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

First noticed this issue when I fitted my first set of DEPO projector lights to the Fabia just before Xmas, but due to them going back and waiting for my replacements I completely forgot about it.
Now the new headlights are installed, it's just come to my attention again.

When the headlights are on, quite a bit of radio interference is present.
I've done a bit of looking around on other forums, and I know i'm not the only one, but I'm just wondering if anyone here has been able to find a solution using aftermarket HID kits.

I'm using these ballasts from HID's Direct http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/canbus-pro-mid-slim-hid-ballast-35w-for-hid-kits/ (which actually claim within the description that they wont interfere with radios, hmmm...  ) along with the D2S adapters.

I've attached some ferrite cores on the D2S leads coming out of the ballast, and also wrapped the ballast in tin-foil, but still have interference.

I currently have the ballasts mounted on the inner wings with double sided sticky pads, so just wondering if I perhaps need to position these somewhere different? Has anyone else got them positioned anywhere else or have any other tips or tricks to try and help cure it?

Cheers

Ryan

I have the ballasts in the same place as you. Generally I get poor radio reception. I'll have a look if the headlights being on makes it worse

It used to do that in my focus rs with cheap HID kit!

Typically, you'd still get bad reception even with the lights off.. Only when the connection to the ballasts is removed does the radio reception improve.

I had it with the hid kit I used to have.. 'Used to' being the important words, got that sick of poor reception that I've removed them.

With lights off radio is fine (sidelights don't have an effect either). You can definitely notice the difference when you flick the dipped beam lights on & off.

Thanks for that Joe. If yours is ok, it would be good to know what ballast kit you're using :)

Just had a thought.... would earthing the ballasts potentially cure the problem?

Well, I tried earthing them, but still getting interference :(

Might see if moving them onto the backplates helps cure it...

I haven't really been able to do any testing as I only drive in the dark at the moment so turning the lights on and off is a big if a no no!

I get this a little bit, only seems to be on radio 2 haha.

On of mine is mounted on the plastic airbox. So i was wondering if that would be the problem. Maybe mounting it onto a metal part may help?
