High mileage engines in VRS's and remaps...............

Featured Replies

Ok some of you guys will have seen my Fabia rally car build on here..

There are always guys asking on here about remapping with higher mileage cars and if it does any harm etc well I did my first rally with my new car last weekend fitted with an engine I removed from a golf gttdi with 178,000 miles on it.

All I did to this engine was fit a new cambelt kit and upgrade to the pd 150 headbolts (one at a time didn't lift the head off) I didn't even stick any new big end shells or cam bearings in just new oil and filter and I fitted the garret pd130 turbo that came with the blown engine in the vrs origionally.

so a totally origional high miler that has been serviced when needed but the owner had never had any mechanical work done on it and he had owned the car from 1 year old, remapped by John (fabokavrs on here) to around 170bhp or so, fitted with a forge front mount as the only real mod to the hardware and taken to a rally and thrashed as hard as I could thru 50 miles of stages and beating several scooby's and expensive escorts and has no apparent ill effects so far, the total fuel consumption on the dash was 9.8 mpg to get an idea of how hard a life it just had and it has not used a drop of oil or water etc..finished 31st overall and 2nd in the over 2 litre class too.

safe to say as long as the oil has been changed and of the correct type then a remap on your VRS really shouldn't hurt the engine at all..

2nd in the over 2L catagory? In a 1.9?

It's a turbo, so a capacity multiplier applies.

Yes the MSA apply a x1.7 to the cc with a turbo, there was a dispension to run a tdi as it's actual capacity but that was dropped tis year typically :(

so my fabia is 3.2 or something like that , just makes it more of a challenge tho up against millington escorts and such in the class

And this is fwd still I assume? Lsd fitted to? How did It fair on the changing terrain?

Any videos of this in action ?

Yea still fwd, LSD fitted and proper moulded slicks, really don't understand why people sat they are understeery cars lol a bit of setup makes em handle very well.

Only done the 1 event so far but there should be a few vids on the web if you google brean stages 2014 I guess. There was a video firm filming so should be an official vid somewhere, lots of pics too.

A friend on a biking forum who was co-driving for another car saw you there!

He was in this :)

That looks a bit "residential" - of the mobile home variety. Did any garden fences suffer?

What about your clutch set up?
