Post new turbo problem

Featured Replies

Just replaced the turbo & flushed out the intercooler. Had some smoke but it went away after a short run out. The car runs now nicely in higher gears once rolling but is rough in first and second with a reluctance to rev up. Occasionally smokes a little in those gears. Ticks over OK. So I'm wondering what's wrong now, can it be oil in the intercooler still or something more serious. Any advice gratefully received.

Any whooshy noises from the engine?

No, the engine sounds fine. Starts ok, ticks over ok, turbo feels like it kicks in ok once you're rolling at 30 plus. Just doesn't pull away from a standing start very well as it doesn't rev properly.

Anybody had this problem after fitting a new turbo. Nothing in the Haynes manual to give a clue. I suspect garages would not be too interested as I did the replacement myself, but funds are short so needs must.

Have you check all of the boost control side, not sure on the 1.9 but my previous car (8P A3 2.0TDi 140) the turbo control was vacuum and relied on a good actuator and vacuum lines from the control (solenoid) block and vacuum pump.

If the 1.9 is also variable vane control - you may have an issue with the vane control and so aren't producing the required boost at lower revs.

You need to do the physical checks over the install and boost control and may require boost logging using diagnostics.

Good Luck.

Thanks Paul. Just ran the missus to the shops about 6 miles. Although a bit reluctant to start it ran great until I stopped at a road end when it just would not rev to pull away. Fiddled with the throttle a bit and suddenly all was well and there was plenty of power again. Same thing happened on the way home. If it was an old fashioned petrol engine you would be fiddling with the choke cos it feels like it's flooding itself. I've not touched the fuel system by the way, just replaced the turbo core. Is it possible I have not got the variable vane actuator lined up right?
