What vacuum at warm idle?

Featured Replies

Hi people,

Just fitted a boost gauge that the brother had fitted to his now deceased turbo aircooled engine.

I noticed it doesn't sit exactly at 0 or 1 at atmospheric pressure. It sits at about +0.3 BAR

I had a bit of time on my hands so fitted it anyway in the hope that it might miraculously fix itself. It is reading -0.4 BAR vacuum at idle and I think goes a little lower on overrun.

The strange bit is, it says the car is boosting up to 1.7 BAR at WOT which would be around 24 PSI. This seems a little high....

so I was just wondering, is it likely to be boosting up to 1.4 BAR (1.7-0.3) which would be 20psi or is it normal for them to not zero themselves to atmospheric? It holds the 1.7BAR until about 4.5K and drops to just over 1 when things are going too fast to get a proper look at it.

What do other people's read at idle?

Cheers for any input

I can't answer regarding the amount of boost it's running. Someone else should be able to do that.

As for the gauge, if it doesn't sit at 0 when switched off, it's not going to be very accurate. If it was mine, I'd ditch it and buy another.

I bought one from Halfrauds last week for £12. Link here http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_231493_langId_-1_categoryId_165732

Mine peaks roughly around 22psi and mines stage 2 so depending the mods you have I'd try another boost gauge
