Fuel consumption down to 25mpg

Featured Replies

Skoda Octavia, ten years old, is only getting 25mpg. Two garages checked it out. None of the obvious like cracked turbo or coolant pipes. Neither garage thought it was the fuel injectors - the engine "runs very nicely" and there's no black smoke unless you rev very hard.

Really loathe to scrap the car but can't afford to run it at only 25mpg. Any thoughts on what the problem might be would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Tom

Petrol? Diesel? What engine?

Have you done a full service?

whats the model, assume its a diesel

Perished and leaky fuel pipes?  May only leak when pressurised, so no puddles to see under the car.

Binding brakes? Correct tyre pressures? Clogged air or fuel filter? Fault codes?

Boost leak

Does the trip computer agree with the brim-to-brim figures?

If the computer is OK but brim to brim is low then it could be a fuel leak - only leaking when on the move and the system is pressurised.  Or someone is syphoning it off when you aren't looking!

If computer is low but brim-to-brim is OK then something has gone awry with the computer calibration.

If its ten year old it must be a mk1, tbh my 06 petrol vrs doesnt do a great deal more than 25mpg

Try changing what brand of fuel you use. VRS has been dropping mpg for a while and we are now trying a different brand. Seems better.

My astravan was dropping mpg for a few weeks with asda diesel. Went back onto shell fuelsave and its back up again. Also put a tank of bp ultimate in now and then to.clean the system. That seems to help too.

Could be a 2004 mkII, an early one though.
