Drivers door 'sticking'

Featured Replies

A few days ago I noticed by drivers door is sticking when opened. It doesn't pop when you pull the handle inside. You have to give a good shove with your arm to open it. The other doors still work as expected.

Anyone else experienced this? Car is only a few weeks old and it did open properly initially.

New one on me, I'd been having a word with the dealer...

Yeah I need to see him as I have a sticky headlight washer too.

Hopefully the door is an easy fix and doesn't require taking it apart and introducing a rattle.

Could just be a latch adjustment

Reviving old thread. My passenger door and rear passenger drivers side door are strange on my 6 week old car. You can't open them if you are at a slight angle to them. You have to be facing them and pull hard. I was going to wait until my service in approx 7000 miles for them to be looked at since it's not an emergency. Is this covered by the warranty? Should I let my dealer know now to get it done free of charge or am I ok waiting for 6 months?

I had the same thing (if your referring to opening from the outside). The dealer simply greased the handles and it's been fine since.

My passenger door is the same, quite stiff to open from the outside. Been putting off taking it in because it only generally affects the missus [emoji2]

Thanks. That can wait until the service then :-)

Mine does the same. It's weird almost like a massive vacuum within the cabin. But in reality it's just a sticking catch.

Well documented in another thread, couple of drops of oil in the door handle provides a permanent fix.

Will wd40 be ok?

Will wd40 be ok?

WD40 isn't really a lubricant, although people do use it as one and it will work OK for a while. But really its for water displacement (WD) and for anti-seizing (loosening rusty bolts).

How about gt85

Similar to WD40. Silicone spray lubricate is more what I think you need.

Silicon isn't good for the paintwork is it?

Small tin of three in one oil, has a handy applicator tube. Cheap as chips & good for many other jobs around the house.

That's what I used on mine. :)

Bit of lube and the missus is happy... that the door doesn't stick anymore

Your probably right, but there probably is not many lubricants that would be good for paintwork. My door top vertical rubber sticks slightly causing a squeak sometimes when door opens but a bit of normal furniture polish (mild silicone based) on the offending seal and surrounding area has resolved the problem for me.

Loads of car waxes and protectors have silicone in them so I'm guessing its not bad for your paint.

Hubby wants to know how to lubricate the handle. Do you just pull on it and pour the oil behind it? Wont it just fall in the door?

That's it just pull the handle & drop a few drops on the exposed mechanism. You don't need much so use it sparingly then it won't run everywhere.

If any does run onto the door wipe it off don't leave it, but a little goes a long way!!
