I think I know why people don't bother to inform the DVLA of engine conversions

Featured Replies

Greetings,

You see so many cars for sale on Ebay etc, which have had an engine conversion and in the description they have the phrase, "still 1.1 on V5, up to new owner to change."

I think I've figured out why. The DVLA make it unneccessarily difficult. As some will know, I've recently converted my 1400cc Rover 200 to 1800cc. As I'm a responsible adult, I filled in the new engine details on the V5 and sent it straight off to the DVLA. Nearly four weeks later, I receive this:

So it looks like I've got to **** about and get my mate, who has an independant garage, to write me a letter to prove that I'm not just being truthful for a laugh.

DVLA, Y U so complicated?

I know the feeling, the V5 for my Superb listed it as a 2 door saloon, it's an estate. The only way they would change the details was with photographic evidence, not helped by the fact the speaking to a human at the Dvla is virtually impossible .

It is a PITA, but at least they do something , even if anyone can get any documents, receipts and Headed Notes from a VAT registered Garage.

The engines from Stolen Cars often end up in others vehicles, often fitted by Mechanics and Garages.

i wish they would have proper checks & call all doing V5 changes into a VOSA station for a real Visual check.

I changed my engine last year and informed the DVLA of the new number, V5 was amended with no evidence. Now I've realised I copied the number wrong,  new specs. not working for me very well, so I'll wait till MOT time and get the tester to verify my engine number.

It all seems quite reasonable to me. If they just took your word for it they'd be people on here moaning that it's too easy for criminals to get away with fraud.

Which is OK, until you have a classic car which is mechanically like Triggers broom. God knows what number should be on the block of my Mk1 Escort, but it was fitted over 16yrs ago, and came in boxes to be assembled.

If you check the DVLA website it explains it.

If you are changing just the engine number its no real problem.

They ask for all this info if you change the engine size.

The reason being it could affect the taxation class.

The real reason most of the dodgy sellers on ebay say its up to the new owners is because they have been running a big motor and insuring a 1.4 or something like that.
