1.6 CRTDI 105bhp or the 1.2 CRTDI Greenline. Older pre-FL models (07-09/10 reg) Have the 1.4 PD TDI and 1.9 PD TDI. Model depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for a basic car, then maybe a standard/SE car (The older models are named trim levels 1, 2 and 3 going upwards from 1). If looks tickle your fancy, perhaps look for a Monte Carlo (Only with the 1.6 diesel engine or the 1.2TSI petrol, don't knock the TSI before you try it!).

 

Anything to look for? Well if you're buying new, try and find yourself a good deal. Some good run-offs kicking about.

VRS all the way the best mixture of power and mpg. Due to doing 15k a year Ive 7 fast diesels all remapped upto just under 200bhp with excellent mpg but the tractor sound and predictable power i needed a change and went back to petrol hence the VRS this gives me the best of everything good mpg if driven nice, doesnt sound like a tractor, the power is delivery is very nice, pulls well and puts a smile on my face everytime i drive it. This is the first car im gonna keep standard.

Think VERY CAREFULLY before committing to a late diesel (with dpf system) CR90 or CR105.

If the majority of your journeys are lengthy - OK, but continued town use is not to be recommended as the car just does not really reach a proper operating temperature. Like all manufacturers, Skoda have not fully cracked this one yet, and it is the case that some expensive problems lie ahead for users of this system. I have had 2 skoda fabia diesels

1 - 1.4 PD (2009) -  which was superb in every way

2 - 1.6 CR90 (2011) - performance very good, bit a multitude of recurring problems prompted a return to petrol

 

As iSamage has said - do not knock the 1.2 TSI - try it you will be pleasantly surprised.

18k pa+ then diesel, otherwise TSi.

I don't understand why there isn't a 2.0 diesel option as there is with then Seat Ibiza... Maybe too close the the MK1 vRS...

Have to disagree with this, I wouldn't swap my 'one of the last' 1.9 PD Tdi engines for a DPF strangled CRDi disaster.

 

These engines go to the moon and back... who cares about a little diesel clatter that you cant hear with the Radio turned on anyway.

depends on what you want, the 1.2TDi is a little noisy but efficient on long runs, the 1.6TDi 105 has a bit more go, but not as economical

 

I have a GLII 1.2TDi, but the daughter has a monte 1.6TDi 105 and I drive both

 

short run 1.2 gives around 60mpg, long runs at 56-60mph I can get into the 80's mpg

 

short runs on monte around 50mpg, long runs low 60's mpg, but it is more fun to drive and easier overtaking

 

having said that, SWMBO's car is a citigo greentech 75, and for a 1.0 3 cylinder does well, so don't discount the smaller petrols, round town 50 ish mpg, long run (not been allowed yet)

30,000 mls a year then you'd definitely be better of with the 1.6 TDI CR than the petrol.

Don't go for the 1.2 diesel though, yes you'll get a bit further to a tankful but they've got no 'performance' to speak of.

The 1.2 TSI 105 is a great engine too but not as Eco as a diesel, doesn't matter to me as I don't do lots of miles but I have more fun in the TSI as I did in me previous 4 diesels, it's a lot smoother and quieter as well.

If you'll be doing 30 k miles a year then plenty of lengthy journeys is a given, so no DPF regen problems to worry about if you go for the 1.6 tdi. You'll be way over the 'break-even' for the higher fuel cost of diesel vs the lower economy of a petrol, so a diesel is a no-brainer for your needs, IMO. The 1.9 Tdi PD is a gem of an engine and tough as nails (mine has been impeccable and the car is a keeper for me) but the last Fabias containing this engine will be early '10 plate. You'll be lucky to find a 1.9 or 1.4 PD model with less than 60k miles, which is not an issue for the engine but the suspension and interior will have seen better days on 4-6 year old cars.

There's no doubt that the common-rail 1.6 tdi is more refined than the 1.9 but there's little evidence that it brings additional economy benefits over the earlier design. The best diesel Fabia for you really depends on your budget and willingness to deal with potential additional parts replacement associated with running an older, higher mileage car. All things considered, given your high annual mileage I think a low mileage 1.6 tdi 105 would be your best choice (the 75 and 90 PS options would be less well suited to your mega motorway miles).

Unless there is some desperate need to have a Fabia, get the Polo or the Ibiza with the 2.0 CR TDi 140PS.

And, if you do decide it has to be Skoda, make sure you drive one after dark (preferably on a dark motorway) so you can really appreciate the headlamps. They are not good.

I'll be honest, if it was me, I'd be getting a a SEAT Leon 1.6TDi with the LED headlamps and the decent satnav bundled in for free at the moment. On paper it's about £2k more than the Fabia, but on 30,000 miles per year you need somewhere nice because you'll be spending about 30 hours per week in there.
