Door seal failure

Featured Replies

The Roomster I just bought from Skoda dealer is just over 3 years old, 22,000 miles. It comes with Skoda 1 year warranty, but the original 3 year warranty has expired.

One week from buying, the "spongy" rubber seal around the drivers door is split, and 3 inches are disintegrating, the rubber is crumbling away.

Sent email & photos to the dealer, admit that they have seen this splitting rubber on other cars, but say its not covered now by the original 3 year warranty.post-113031-0-78889400-1391862648_thumb.jpgpost-113031-0-20516900-1391862651_thumb.jpg

Do you think this is a manufacturing fault of the seal and should be covered under warranty?

Door seals are NOT included in the list of wear and tear components in the new car warranty booklet, so assuming the used car warranty conditions are similar they should replace foc. If they are being difficult get them to point out where in the warranty conditions door seals are excluded.

I would very carefully check the other seals just in case.

Anyway one week on they ought to just do it........

The only possibility I can think of besides a manufacturing fault is that the previous owner has used some totally unsuitable cleaner that has attacked the rubber.  Are they all like that?

Seconded

Previous owner was a big fatty

I've seen seals like that before on numerous makes of cars, it's caused by abrasion of getting in and out of the car, or the seat belt getting caught on it.  Not warrantable in my opinion.  After such a short period of ownership, I would have thought that they'd replace it out of goodwill at their expense.

Our previous Pug 106 had an identical seal failure, (we bought it second hand with that failure) because the lady who sold it to us was twice as we were (are) and she was in a constant fight with the door and the seal every time she used the car. I never replaced it, never had any issues with it like wind nose or water ingress and sold it this way after six happy years. BUT when we bought it, it was almost 8 years old.

So in your case maybe you could ask for a goodwill gesture as fordfan states above.

A week after reporting the seal failure to the Skoda dealer by telephone, I have now sent 2 polite emails + photos to the salesman.

He is not returning my calls nor answering my emails.

The company have not provided any paperwork for the secondhand 1 year warranty 2 weeks after my purchase.

Suggestions please?

So far I have not named & shamed the Skoda dealer.

Try Skoda Customer Service, they should also be able to supply the used warranty t&cs.

Drivers side only I'd guess?

I'd be hoping they'd fit it for you FOC, or at the very least cost of the parts only.

You've had it only a week and if it's a skoda dealer, don't you get a certain number of days to change your mind for another vehicle?

Spoke firmly to the salesman on Friday morning. He phoned back a few hours later saying the dealership has ordered a new seal and is sending it FOC at their cost.

Any hints on fitting myself?

The Skoda s/h extended warranty is handled by Skoda who will send me the details in the post in due course. I will know then what is or is not covered.

The new door seal finally arrived on 25th February. My local car service garage showed me how to fit it, carefully removed the D shaped panel off the end of the  righthand end of the dashboard which made fitting slightly easier.

Thanks for all the replies to this thread.
