Taking delivery of my new car - what to check?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm getting the car next week! This is my first car. ....What is the "handover" process like? What shoud I be checking for? I have very few add ons, thrown in for free. Apart from those, it's a standard SE model.

Would the dealer try to sell me extras on the day? If yes, what to buy and what not to?

Thank you for all the help so far. I'm SOOO excited - Can't wait now!

The dealer won't try and sell you add ons at handover, he wanted his cut when you sealed the deal and signed the order sheet.

It's a straight forward handover process, mine was anyway, all that happens is there'll be a couple of bits of paperwork to sign then he'll take you to the car and show you all the primary controls like lights, wipers that kind of thing then off you go.

Check to see if the bodywork is OK, no scratches or little scuffs, these are rare anyhow and how much fuel is in the tank.

Before you go to pick it up maybe ring the dealer and see if they'll chuck some fuel in if you haven't already got them to agree to it.

Enjoy your new wheels, it's always a good feeling to you pick up a new car.

Take your order form with you and check off everything listed. All the options etc - easy to miss one in the excitement. Also make sure you test drive it to make sure it isn't one of the ones that pulls to the left before signing. They'll be far more willing to fix it pre-handover than post!

If it's an SE you're buying you don't have to worry about pulling to the left, it only affected some Monte Carlos and vRSs I believe.

They're great cars anyway, I love mine, much better than the diesel Peugeots I've been driving for the last few years.

Check spare wheel is there along with locking wheel nut. Tyre pressures on mine were low at collection by 1 bar on all wheels.

Enjoy, great car.

Do you get a Spare Wheel unless you ordered/ buy one from them?

If you have not ordered a spare already,

you might be able to buy cheaper elsewhere unless the dealer wants to give you a good deal on one.

Quite right, spare wheel is included on the £9995 SE deal that I purchased, but is not specified in the brochure on standard SE so may not be relevant if you have speced your SE from the brochure.

Advert does say in the small print for the SE offer that a spare wheel is included, lucky sods.

We ordered a SE - the one on the deal at £9995.

Thanks for your inputs everyone!

Spare Wheel??? what's one of them (grumbles about Greenline weight limits and mpg... blah blah blah!)

Yeah it's just a poke around the car (check the bodywork etc...), show you where everything is, let you have a play (well they did for me) sign the paperwork, and drive away!! Job Jobbed!!
