Faulty rear wiper - would this be a MOT fail?

Featured Replies

Booked in for an MOT, and today the rear wiper has decided only to work intermittently.

Does anyone know if it the rear wiper operation is tested as part of the MOT?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

I don't think it is. I was in your position a couple of years back and I bought a new rear wiper motor and finished fitting it an hour before the mot. When I joked about this with the examiner he replied it wasn't part of the test and I needn't have bothered. Hope this is still the case.

Extract from the gov.uk website on mot tests.

"Wipers/washers: Operate to give the driver a clear view ahead."

I would say that doesn't include the rear wiper.

The rear wiper is not a testable MOT item, like reversing lamps and a spare wheel.

I don't know if this is still the case, but re spare wheel - I was told years ago that if the car has one present it must pass the test. If the wheel is absent, it does not fail MOT though of course if you had to put it on and it was illegal regarding tread depth or whatever, you could still be done!

A vehicle can't fail an MOT if there is a fault with the spare, at worst it would be a pass and advise,

the rule of thumb is if its not in the testers manual it cant fail or be tested, if you think there is a problem ask the tester to show you the section in the manual it will list

the items to be tested and the reason to fail.

Mine passed it's MOT in November with a non functioning rear wipe & never made it even to the advisory list. Afterwards spoke to an MOT testing friend who confirmed it's not a part of the test.

Thanks all,

     Phew, that's a relief.

Checked the lights, it's getting new tyres, all warning lights OK, screenwash topped up......

....fingers crossed.

Mine's gone again today. Already had the wiper motor replaced once. Bloody pain.

Mine has been de-wipered for 4 years or so, and no issues.

I am planning a "re-wipering" though now :D
