PRNDS Lights flashing on dash?

Hi, first  post on here - please be gentle with me! :rofl:

 

Bought a 2005 Skoda Octavia 1.9tdi PD Ambiente Auto from local independent garage with 100,000 miles on clock.

 

Got it home and noticed the PRNDS lights flashing, It has the DSG auto box, Googled the 'problem' but can't find the exact same symptoms as mine, which are:

 

Start car and select a gear (D or R) and the appropriate segment lights (plus '1' if 'D' is selected), as soon as the car moves all the segments then flash and the '1' dissappears!

 

The car drives fine and changes into all the gears as I would expect, I'm not sure whether the box is Tiptronic or not (there is a '+/-' at side of the 'D'), but, if it has, it's not selectable.

 

Spoke to an engineer at a local Skoda dealer and he's never heard of this particular fault before.

 

The car has gone back to the seller for investigation but, so far, no fault has been found, I know he's taken it to an independant garage and had it plugged into a computer whilst on a rolling road and nothing has shown up.

 

Anyone any ideas on this please?

Doesn't sound right.

 

Although normally the flashing display on a DSG normally means the car won't drive or there would be juddering or clutch slip while driving.

 

It could be anything from a dodgy sensor to a failed mechatronics unit or clutch pack.

 

Either way if they can't fix it then you have the right to a full refund.

Thanks for your replies............I see I've made a schoolboy error (despite leaving school in 1963!!) and somehow posted this in the Skoda Superb section!!!!! Perhaps the mods can move it to the Octavia II threads :bandit:

If it is driving normally, then it sounds like a sensor issue. 

 

The manual has the following information about overheating clutches: "An overheating of the clutches can be detected by the flashing of the selector level indicator and the “jerk” of the clutches, finally the clutches are opened. The power transmission from the engine to the front wheels is interrupted and as a result of this the vehicle can no longer be driven."

 

So it could be falsely detecting high clutch temperature due to a faulty sensor (In any case you really have to go some to genuinely overheat the clutches). A scan with VCDS or VAG diagnostics should show up a faulty sensor, which should make it an easy fix for the garage.

Thanks for that, spoke briefly to someone yesterday and they have indeed found a faulty sensor - fingers crossed!

Further update: Spoken to dealer today and it's had the box removed and sent away, as the 'sensor' replacement requires the box to be disassembled - my fingers are still crossed!

Thinking of buying a elegance but the gear selector lights are flashing the guy im buying from as said he as changed the oil and the mechatronic as box sent away to a specialist and fitted with a 2 year guarantee and its still flashing. There is no jerkiness and no problems while driving the car gear changes very smooth. If you put in park lights stop flashing when you put in drive after 5 seconds they flash again.I have been told that there is a chip or something behind the dash and the part is £100+vat that may need replacing anybody have any ideas? The car is unmarked as been well looked after is on a 2005 with 65000 miles............. hope someone can shed some light on the matter

Thanks for reply will find fault code tomorrow but spoke to the mechanic who fitted the gearbox and he says there are no fault codes for the gearbox but there was a unrecognized signal to the dash so the next job would be to have the instrument panel checked out if faulty repaired. What are your thoughts?

My view hasn't changed. Make the sale conditional on the seller fixing the fault.

It could be a faulty CAN gateway, dash insert, wiring, faulty mechatronics unit or gearbox.

If the gearbox/mechatronics unit been replaced, is it compatible with the rest of the car?

Too many unknowns :(

OK, so, having been without the car since 7th Feb - I STILL haven't got it back!!!!!

 

Called him this morning and told him I was rejecting the car, he couldn't understand why and thought I was being most unreasonable!!!!!!

 

Anyway he told me that I have to have the p/x vehicle back, which I told him that I'd sought legal advice and I don't. I've been told to call him Monday to see what cash he's got (I did say he could do a bank transfer). 

 

I've since bought a '56 plate Skoda Octavia 1.9TiD Classic with 75,000 miles and FSH - lovely car!

OK, original car still not ready, dealer being an absolute ar3ehole and evasive.

 

Tracked where the car is and spoke to the guy there, apparently a 'module' is faulty and would cost approx £2k to replace. He's sent the unit to his homeland - Poland - for repair, and it's now on its' way back to him - due to arrive this Saturday.

 

He assures me it will be 100% fixed and will come with 12 months warranty. He's checked the car over and everything else is fine with it.

 

I know that I can legally get my money back, but, the dealer is disputing that fact and says that he doesn't have that cash to give me a refund. I don't want to be travelling to him several times a week to pick up thenodd £100 he and there.

 

The quickest/easiest way out, as far as I can see, is to collect the car directly from the repairer and sell it on.

 

Can anyone enlighten me as to what this 'module' is, and what it does please?

Sounds like it's the mechatronic unit that's at fault judging by the cost quoted.

 

It seems it may be a good option to wait till you have the car back and go from there.

My PRNDS flashed - turned out to be mechatronics failure at only 14k miles/4 tears old (mistype strangely appropriate) - protested to Skoda customer care who offered to pay 60% of the £2200 cost (!)

To cap it all, dealer admin error and glacier-slow processing by VAG HQ Milton Keynes meant it took SIX WEEKS to get my car back!
