So my PS3 almost caught fire!

Featured Replies

For the last few days my PS3 fan has been VERY loud, had it a few years so i thought it might just need a clear out. (this console has never been opened or dropped or moved since putting it on my desk) turned it on this morning and i could smell a strong burning smell......

I opened up the case and found this being held on by only the smallest amount of solder and the other bits of solder has literally fallen to bits!!

So i have spent thismorning soldering the wires direct to the board and then gluing over them

They will be wrapped in leccy cable and then i well let you know if it even turns on!

What shape PS3?

Mark 1, 2 or 3?

Its a fat model, one of the last before slim

If you mean the mark one

They are known for overheating,

Sounds like you may well end up YLOD like my first ps3 did.

Lots of places re flow the solder on them for not much money nowadays.

Its caused by them getting hot and micro cracks in the solder.

It's the lead free stuff they insist on using for 'eco' reasons...

Good news is that you can get the 500gb mark 3 with two decent

games on amazon for under £200.

I've just bought a mark 3 for my other tv in the conservatory

as Mrs Grr keeps hogging my mark 2 in the living room with her

ruddy netflix addiction :p

appears to be working........ wait for the "my house has burnt down" thread

Not a lot of software yet that's why I just bought another ps3.

I guess I'll get a PS4 when they are cheaper and there are

more games available. :)

Dude, you really need some heatshrink in your life :)

I know, i did have loads but i cant find it and i couldn't be bothered to go out.

If it all goes wrong again it gives me the excuse of needing a ps4

You sure it's not the diesel version and you've just interupted a regen

  • 1 month later...

My fat boy melted itself

have you tried turning on with the switch on the back with both buttons on the front pressed in for the mental fan clean ?

It gave up the ghost a week later, got a super slim as a replacement

It might of been worth you cleaning the thermal paste from it and applying new whilst it were still working.

All the dust collects under the Mainboard where the big fan is located.
