Columbus Issue - only showing clock

Featured Replies

Hi, have a mate with a Columbus and it is only showing the clock, been updated to 4020 and is the 3T0 035 680 B version. The unit turns on shows the welcome to skoda logo and then sits on the clock. ive pressed everything but still doesnt work. i have tried the reset and the swl cd but still showing the same. anything i can do?

Has it ever worked?

well im not sure, he just bought the car and came to me as he knows I have a columbus too. im assuming it worked but when he came to me as it suffered the issue of home screen restarting every 20 seconds

Might be worth trying to reinstall firmware 4120 from www.rnsfirmware.com.  I wonder if the wrong firmware has been used (e.g. 4020 modified for older units, which this isn't).

Other members have reported a blank screen fixed by a firmware update.  This may need a map re-install though.

hmm well ive got 4020 on my A columus so imagined this would be the same, ill try 4120, shall i try the modded firmware or the normal one?

i dont mind doing a map install as long as I get the firmware working, ideally 4xxx or 3xxx

There are two 4020, one modified for earlier revision A units (which confusingly are not the same as yours with A at the end of the part number) and another type suitable for newer units.  It is the former that is on this www.rnsfirmware.com site, not currently sure where to find the other.

The 4120 is on that site is labelled modified but these are different country specific modification for European Units, not modifications for age as it were. That is suitable for newer units including those with A at the end of the part number.

Does that make sense?

yes makes sense Adam thanks, I will try those. And to update, do I need the car in ignition? or completely off? Because ive noticed that the RNS does not turn on when the ignition is off

Hi Adam, tried the 4120 firmware from RNSFirmware and it failed half way! came up with swl error so not sure about that firmware. ive got verbatim discs and burned correctly at slowest speed and ive burned plenty of these this way so not sure! ive got official vagcom and when i do plug it in, its showing me the unit is on 4024 fw so i dont know whats going wrong??

Mmmm odd. Having said that they do fail occasionally. Is this the car with the columbus only showing the clock?

I think this is the firmware kbphoto used in his columbus with the same part number. Kb is that correct?

yes so what happens is when i put keys in ignition, the columbus will turn on, show boot logo and then go straight to black screen showing time only.

now ive tried 4120 update but that failed

I would try burning another to rule out a dodgy burn first.

yes ill have to try it tomorrow, spent 3-4 hours on it today with the keys in ignition, im always scared to drain the car battery when updating these!

I drained mine when I did this too. Good luck and i'm sure kb who knows his stuff with newer units will offer some advice shortly.

any tips on the best way to avoid draining the battery?

Mine was on way out anyway to be fair.

Drive it for a bit between goes??!!

yeah im going to have to, i guess update will take place on friday now!

i just had one last question though (sorry and thanks for answering) the unit is currently on 4024 so if I was to go onto 1300 just to get it working, how would i go about doing this? Ive heard im meant to activate downgrade in the menu but the unit does not turn on and is stuck on the clock so whats the work around this??

Duplicate sorry

Im not sure sorry. But given you have vcds, I wonder if software downgrade can be enabled in the adaptations under module 56?

Mine is a 3T0...A unit with a low HW number (06 IIRC) and I used a 402x firmware from My GTi, but I think the link is down.

I still have a copy of the ISO and can put that on my website and email a download link if required.

I have a 4120 (modified for Europe downloaded from RNSFirmware site) that I have not tried as yet so can 't say if that works yet.

In theory the 4120 unmodified (or indeed some of the 5xxx) firmware should work on your unit.

Have you seen this?

I'm not sure it applies though as I think yours is later than a revision 'C' unit.

Revision B and C revision units

These units will become SW revision D after the upgrade however when coding the unit using VCDS you will receive the error

“Coding Rejected, Error 31: Request Out of Range”

Before saving the new coding manually add a 10th byte (00) at the end before pressing “Do It” as per the example below

9 byte coding (B/C SW revisions):

020104000400001100

10 byte coding (D SW revision):

02010400040000110000

This might also be worth a shot:

I haven't tried the link though...

Download Unofficial SWL recovery CD

This is used if the unit is stuck with Gateway Error 202 or similar and is unable to boot after the upgrade. It’s based on the 272x firmware but can be used to recover RNS 510?s running any version. Insert the media into the RNS 510 and start a new SWL process by pressing Setup + Eject +Info/Mic (top right hand button next to the DVD slot). It will attempt to restore a new SWL process and will enable it to boot up. (Thanks again to Josi)

I have always wondered about this 10th byte but not aware of anyone needing to do it. Are you/did you??

ill have to have a look at adaptations! would work that way i guess.

ah the vcds error! i did recieve this and could this fix the clock error i was getting? i didnt think it would be anything so left it. ill have to have a look at it, if only the upgrade didnt take an hour, i would be getting it done quicker.

i do have the 4020 modified version downloaded, thanks. i will download the 4120 modified from gpsunderground and try that

No I didn't need the 10th byte and don't know anyone who has.

You don't need modified firmware. That might be the cause of the issue.

My 4020 is unmodified.
