Electrical fault - Flashing dash lights, intermittant heater etc...

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I have a 2004 1.9tdi PD130 Elegance with 168k miles.

I have recently had a couple of electrical issues that I hope someone could shed some light on:

  1. Boot does not recognise being open. No 'open door' dash light shows, car will autolock after ~30 seconds ish unless another door is opened. Has been like this for a while, I believe a common fault?
  2. Car immediately locked itsself after unlocking by fob. Made  entry extremely difficult. Would sometimes unlock, be fine for like 30 seconds then re-lock its self, even while driving. This carried on for about 3 days and then fixed itsself. Seem to think it occured after pressure washing - Water ingress somewhere?
  3. Instrument panel lights including radio and climate lights flash / pulsate with ignition on, as well as heating blowing intermittantly. Fast flashes, pulsating radio / climate lights, pulsating heater on / off. This is an odd one, my mechanic has had a quick look and nothing obvious loose etc. Car will sometimes cut out on starting, but does not struggle to turn over and once strted everything is fine and no flashing or pulsating. Never heard of this?!

Anyone got any ideas? They are in reverse order of seriousness / annoyingness considering  I have lived with 1 for about a year and 2 has fixed itsself, but was wondering if there was a root cause?

Any help appreciated,

Cheers!

Went to look at the car the pther day (has been sat for about a week), turned ignition on and speedo needle went up and down on its own accord before I turned on the engine. Seemed to start easier this time. Any ideas?

Water ingress in the drivers door area has corroded the micro switch which operates the interior lights, door open light and gong, and the auto relock from the fob. possibly in the boot lock also if its not registering as being opened.

Get the door card off as per bowders1's guide (Its a pinned thread door latch microswitch) to check

Cluster issue probably due to corrosion on the dash instrument circuit board.

pretty sure theres a guide on this one too, if you do a quick search :)

Just copped you mentioned blower issues too!! IIRC, someone was having similar issues recently, and it was actually traced back to a low charge in the battery.... if you get a chance, pop a tester on it, or borrow a new battery and check if symptoms continue. it can sometimes be the stupid simple solutions...

Thanks, will check out the above advice too.

I did, however, take it to VWS in Exeter who had it for a copuple of days and traced it back to a faulty ignition switch :)

So far so good, will keep updated.
