Fabia I 1.2 sloppy gear change - problem or not?

Featured Replies

Just looked at a 2007 fabia 1.2 with 80k on the clock (as a replacement for our old 1.4). The 1.2 gear selection seemed very sloppy, no problems getting into or getting out of gear but very loose. Is this a known problem with wear of linkages or selector? If is is, is it a big job to change? Or am I just worrying over nothing?!

My 1.2 03 plate has 101000 miles on the clock and the gearbox is perfect with smooth changes, I would suggest getting linkage looked at but I suspect the vehicle will have to be upon a ramp to get adequate access.

My 1.2 petrol gearbox felt great. Strange going from a 170bhp Vrs with heavy steering and a heavy clutch to a 1.2 petrol, clutch is really light... Feels like a throttle pedal and the steering is really light as a feather.

...but yeah, gears are always smooth to feel.

You may be able to see where the play is coming from, either the gear linkage on the gearbox or, like mine, there's play in the mechanism beneath the gear stick. Either way not a massively expensive fix and the fact you said it goes into gear smoothly shows that it's not the gearbox
