Washer Fluid Funny Smell

Featured Replies

OK, my washer fluid was recently topped up with the VAG washer fluid using the correct measurement.

The first few squrits were fine with that nice fluid smell coming through the vents. However, recently the smell has been far from nice and it resembles cat wee.

I want to drain the water bottle but think the only way I can do this is by continuously spraying the screen and headlight washers, unless you know an easy way to do this, believe me it really stinks.

Sounds like it's gone stagnant to me.

Use a bit of plastic pipe to siphon it out, or for extra fast emptying, attach said pipe to a Vax cleaner.

I used to get this but it smelt more like stagnant water (wet washing smell) than cat wee :D I used to find it was where it's not used much, but the VAG screenwash does seem to be particularly prone to it. I switched to Scania "industrial strength" screenwash as a mate found (;)) some and I didn't get the problem with that.......

No idea on how to drain it though, I'm afraid ... could try spraying and then topping up with just water?

I used a cheap plastic suction pump/syphon thingy (I think was originally intended as a home-brew beer accessory) to empty my washer bottle when I wanted to remove some "gone-off" washer fluid. The mesh filter in the filler neck just unclips and pulls out.

Cheers, you just reminded me that I recieved a suction pump when I bought a water rower, I'll use that.

Perhaps I'll rinse out the washer bottle with clean water first then refill afterwards.

You could always just put a hose pipe in the top (removing the mesh first) and run it until all the old stuff has overflowed and run away down the inside of the wing. A bit messy but very quick.
