Remap Removal by Dealer?

Featured Replies

Has this ever happened to anyone?

I have a service coming up, and the bonnet I have a shark sticker. Should I remove it or leave it be? Do dealer have the power to remove a map?

If they do, what options do I have? I know Clive @cntuning said he would put it back on if needed, but surely they can't just remove it?

It won't be removed unless they do an ECU update which overwrites the map.

And if they do, places will redo the map foc iirc.

Why not just say to them you do not want a ECU/Software Update/enhancement doing?

Say you have a remap, if they do not want to Service it get it done some place else, especially if it is just Oil & Filters, Fluids and a look see.

Or are you trying to have a Warranty & Dealer Service History?

Just want to maintain the service history ideally.

Could get it serviced elsewhere, but it's always the 'norm' to have as much genuine service history as poss.

Whos norm, your car is Mapped, do you really think a future buyer cares if a Skoda Workshop Serviced it,

Getting done by a good Independent might well count for more.

Technicians or Mechanics that care about vehicles.

Nothing to a Skoda Service. Money for old rope.

You can use local garage, as long as they use oem spec parts your warrenty will be covered

It won't have a warranty if pre FL

It can or may have an Extended Warranty, some people do,

and that may require Scheduled Services as per Manufacturers Guidelines,

but still that does not require Skoda to do the Servicing.

(But then a re-map probably Voids the Extended Warranty if there is one, so that Warranty was a waste of money.)

No warranty here. It's all about the full skoda service history. Does one maintain it or just go for the garage that does my mot. Think the difference is £30.

Just tell the dealer it's remapped so they leave the ecu alone.

I had free servicing on mine initially and told the dealer it was remapped and not to do any ecu updates. Happens quite a lot these days ...heard of various people with bmw, merc, audi getting car back after a service and the map has been removed due to software update.

Just ask the dealer not to do any software updates and ensure that the instructions are documented. And leave a note for the mechanic on the drivers' seat to ensure that he has also got the message...

This happened to me a few years ago on my Golf MK5. I got it back from the dealer and thought it felt a bit gutless, spoke to Superchips who thought that it was unlikely that the dealer would have been able to over write the map, but when they checked the remap had been overwritten!

I'm not sure if telling your dealer that the car has been remapped is a good idea if the vehicle still has warranty, but a good remap company should put the map back on for you if it does get removed at the dealership.

If you are still under the Manufacturers Warranty, but Remapped, then that part of the Warranty is Void anyway.

So no point not telling, just do not have ECU Updates or do not Expect Someone else to foot the Bill if you need to have your Engine or Drivetrain Repaired or replaced.

If you did have a Warranty Claim for the likes of engine work costing several thousand quid,

they are probably having the ECU Examined anyway.

You Sign the Warranty Application, you make your declaration.

No point trying to Defraud them, you might end up footing the full bill anyway.

Happened to me just 2 hours after I had gone stage 2 on my old pre-facelift Mk2.

Nothing to do other than book it in and get the map reapplied after sending a copy of the ECU H/W and S/W details.

Fair enough if the failure was directly related to the changes a remap makes, but otherwise no. For example, Remapping the engine makes no difference to the likelihood of chain tensioner failure. All modifying does is make the dealer less likely to want to help you, but frankly if you are robust enough person this really isn't an issue.

Hi,

If I was taking my car a dealer I would have software update but would have the map re-installed.

Imagine not running software updates on a MIcrosoft Windows computer - manufacturers find faults with software that controls engine and gearbox and engineer solutions.

John

stever750,

it hardly matters if a Dealer wants to be helpful they are just acting as an Agent.

They are not paying for the work. They get paid.

& that is paid by the underwriters of the Warranty Policy covering Modifications & Approved Modifications,

So the Small Print & Terms & Conditions of Original Manufacturers Warranties or Extended Warranties is what matters.

& of course Consumer Law & rights in the countries that cover the Owner & Vehicle.

(With Extended Warranties any dismantling require to Diagnose or do a report if it is a Warranty Claim is usually at the Customers Expense.)

You can be as Robust as you want, they can get a Specialist Report & You can get a Specialist Report,

But basically, if you want to Tune or Modify your Property,

then maybe do not expect others to pay your bills if it does not work out.

Page 6 Exclusions. (Engine management Software.)

Similar Exclusions are in Care Care Plan Warranties & those from other providers.

A new car warranty is underwritten by the manufacturer (technically usually a wholly owned subsidiary UK registered company.) I wouldn't buy a used car warranty off anyone else, they are practically worthless for the reasons you outline. So, if the starter motor fails on my car, they cannot decline a free repair simply because I have an uprated anti roll bar fitted, and so on. Agreed, if the turbo fails then I doubt I could prove a remap wasn't responsible, but then I wouldn't try that on anyway. Yes you need to take some responsibility for making any modifications, but it's unhelpful scare mongering to claim any mods will invalidate a new car warranty, it's simply not legal to do so under UK legislation, whatever is written into the T&Cs., which by the way I never signed so massively diluted in any legal argument.

Obviously were were talking about the Warranty on the Engine , Gearbox and Drive Train.

Claims on other Auxiliaries might well be rejected.

**You quoted me in post #17,  from my post #15,  were i said,

"then that part of the Warranty is void anyway." **

Not the 'Car' s Warranty, , Wiper Motor, Indicators, Dampers & Springs. ETC, Exterior & Interior bits.

?? Have you actually ever made many Warranty Claims where you had a Modified or Re-mapped Engine or are we talking theory here?

Yes. The throttle body sensor and actuator on my previous car. Unless I'm mistaken, it's very much part of the powertrain.

Not so, however, a dealer cannot deny SOGA rights if the warranty (which gives you additional protection) does not cover it. This means that if a warranty claim is denied, you have to go after the specific dealership that sold you the car (Skoda dealerships are franchises and not owned by Skoda).

You do anyway, since you buy the car from the dealer, whom therefore the contract of sale is with. Skuk merely underwrites the financial claim by supplying the parts foc and paying for the labour costs. Any legal dispute will therefore be between you and the seller, ie the dealer.
