Asus DSL-N55U N600 ADSL Modem/Router

Featured Replies

Following an admission of defeat and succumbing to an Apple Time Capsule, I have this sitting spare after very little use (about 2 months).

Its full title is Asus DSL-N55U Annex A Dual-Band Wireless-N600 Gigabit ADSL Modem Router, HW Ver: A1.

It is a very good modem / router with great signal strength and lots of flexibility and power to 'mod'. It is just not for me and my home network.

All original accessories are included and everything is in 'as new' condition. Including the original packaging and instructions.

I updated the firmware to the latest one when I first got it, and haven't checked since, butI doubt there has been an update since.

Best price I can find is £95 + delivery, although I paid over £110 delivered. So I'm asking £80 including delivery to mainland UK.

I'll post pictures of the actual modem / router tomorrow when I get some light to do it properly.

Until then, this picture (stolen from Asus website) is what it looks like:

Anyone?

  • 3 weeks later...

I have exactly the same router and its very good. Way better than 3 previous Netgears. Bought it after a lot of review reading.

Thanks. It is good and I'm thinking of trying it again as I'm now struggling to get the Apple Time Capsule & Apple Server to do what I want.

Maybe I just need to pay someone to set up my home network properly... Any offers?

Happy to review what you've got running and LAN config if it would help. Drop me a PM.

On this Asus, I think its honestly more than the average home user would pay. Have you tried it on eBay, for a larger audience?

Steve

We have an N66u at home, but mostly because my housemate is a Network/Linux Engineer and refused to use the rubbish that Sky supplied us with,

Is a nice unit this, hope you find a home for it.

It's on eBay, but getting stupid offers of less than £50 and I can't afford to let it go for that sort of price.

Thanks Wardy. I'll PM you.

Still available and open to sensible offers.

A new one with 3 year warranty is £89 from PCWorld. I wasnt a fan of pcw until they let me pay the £30 difference to upgrade a faulty net gear after 18 months

Reduced to £75 including postage.

And I'll throw in a Skoda Citigo baseball cap!

When using the USB port on the router to connect hard disks do you need to install Asus software on the computers or do connected disks show up on the networked computers as a shared/networked drive without any additional software.

If thats confusing

I have a Zxyxel router with a USB port that I cant make use of unless i install additional Zyxel software on all the computers which is a pain as I also have an 02 Wireless IV box with 2 USB ports that just shares drives across my network when connected without additional software

I'm no expert on this, but this is my best guess.

Once the router is powered up and a HD is attached, there is a download link on the router/modem set up pages.

I believe that this downloads software to the attached HD that enabled it to act as network storage available via the home wifi or via the Internet.

AFAIK no additional software is needed in the computers. Please double check as I am not 100% as I did not try getting this feature enabled.

There is also the download option to have an external disk act as an iTunes server. Again I believe this downloads the relevant software to the attached disk.

HTH.

I'm not too bothered about iTunes but i'll do some more research on the USB feature.

Also would the orig receipt be inc to use the 3 year warranty if needed?

I bought a Linksys with a 3 year warranty back in 2003/4 (the infamous WRT54GS) which still works fine today!

If I can find the receipt then you can have it with the router.

Just looking on the box, it says: "AiDisk: Connect a USB storage device and turn it into an FTP server with DDNS in s steps."

No idea what that means, but it might help you.

AiDisk is so you can have your own personal "cloud" and access an external HD from anywhere like dropbox/googledrive

**Edit

Just checked on the USB file sharing

It looks as if this Asus ticks the right boxes!!! It looks an awesome piece of kit and it should be for that price.

I'm just keeping my eye on this as I don't have the funds yet.....eeek
