What service will I need?

Featured Replies

My service isn't due for a while yet but i have a feel its due a big one (timing belt?) so id like to know in advance to squirrel some money away. The past services are below, could anyone tell me what service id need and how much its likely to cost main dealer or independent. The car was a repmobile as you will tell by the mileage so all services were done at a dealer.

Octavia 1.6 CR tdi Greenline 60 plate (oct 2010) 103,000 miles (will be on 115,00 ish by service time)

1) June 2011          - 19k -   Oil

2) November 2011  - 37k -  Oil

3) July 2012            - 56k -  Oil, Brake Fluid, Fuel Filter, Air Filter

4) February 20103  - 75k -  Oil, Fuel Filter, Air Filter (60,000km/4 year service)

5) August 2013       - 95k -  Oil

has it never had the pollen filter changed or the oil filter?

imo EVERY service (every 10k) should be at least oil, oil filter, air filter, pollen filter. Every 20k should add fuel filter to that. cambelt/timing chain depends on the car and what its got etc. Timing chain lasts a lot longer than a cam belt, cam belts should be done every 60k imo.

The oil filter is always changed with the oil.

The cambelt should have been done at four years old regardless of mileage which seems to be the case here.

A variable service is £249. However I'd never pay £249 as you only get a fuel filter over the £129 fixed service.

What annual mileage are you doing? If it's less than 10,000 miles I'd recommend switching from the variable (up to 20,000 miles or 24 months) to fixed (12 months or 10,000 miles whichever is reached first) servicing to ensure your car is getting fresh oil at least once a year.

My advice would be to get a fixed service next time (£129) and change the air and fuel filter yourself for £15 each.

See what is included with each of the two services here...

Skoda say the air filter only needs to be changed ever 60k miles. Pollen filter is every two years. I thought the fuel filter (diesel) is every 40k.

Obviously the oil filter was done with the oil (at least if hope so) and i imagine the pollen filter was done too as it doesn't smell mouldy and the airflow is good in the cabin. I'm just putting whats ticked in the book. I probably do around 12-15k a year so i may just stick to variable. I may also change the oil myself, I did my MG all the time but i could do that without jacking it up and only using a 16mm hex socket for the sump nut for the entire job. I have a feeling this wont be as ridiculously easy.

Anyways, so do we have any ideas on this ill need to get done apart from the norm if any?

The only extra's over and above a variable service are all in the link I posted earlier under the maintenance tab...

Brake fluid change

A/C service

Cambelt

You have another three years before you'll need another cambelt. Ring Skoda UK with your VIN to ensure it was done during the fourth service.

Brake fluid is every three years so you are good for another two years.

The A/C service is not required unless you notice a drop off in performance.

So, as recommended above I'd either go for a variable service at £249, or a fixed service at £129 plus an air and fuel filter as extras for approx £80 (£210) saving £40 over the standard variable service.

Dont ever think that just because you have paid for a service that its what you actually get... Mine has a full service history and has all the ticks in the book, yet my suspicions got the better of me and whilst doing some routine checks myself found that my pollen filter had never actually been changed (date was 2008) and my air filter was a black as a black thing covered in black stuff despite apparently being changed 10000 miles ago!!! needless to say my trust in any dealers/garages is gone so I figured the best way to get all the bits done I wanted was to buy them all from Eurocarparts, fit what I could myself (air/pollen) and pay a garage to change oil and filter I provided and watched whilst they did it!!! I can at least sleep better having watched the oil changed and knowing the rest I have done to my much more precise standards (cleaned all the air pipes and MAF sensor whilst it was all off) total cost of it all was less than 120 quid!! with decent VW spec shell helix oil.. (as mentioned in this thread though i have gone to a fixed service so il get the oil and filter changed again in 10000 miles)

Its not hard to do any of it really and the only reason I didnt do the oil and filter is because its quicker for a garage with a Lift to get access...

May be the sceptic, distrusting person in me but next time start putting little marks on things and then checking to see if they have actually been done... Also forget to mention I had the fuel filter done before at a garage, cost me £50 and all they did was use the same £7 filter from eurocarparts, undo 5 torx screws, take the old filter out, put new one in, let it soak for about 5 mins, then do the housing back up again tightening each screw up at even intervals to spread the load... all of it is easy really and can be done at home in no time...

Bottom line, most garages are ******s!!! just my opinion but im entitled to it... Also filters are cheap enough to replace every year anyway and not worry!!

seriously is a pollen filter just what it says on the tin, stops pollen in the drivers cabin.

Just rang Skoda UK. They confirmed there is no record of the belt being done specifically although it should have been done on its fourth service. I Will ring the dealer whose stamped it and see if they have any additional information but if they can't tell me then I'll have to get it done as a matter of course next service.

Just looking in the book and it seems CR dervs are not due cambelts until 180,000km (112,000 miles) so its looking more likely than not that it hasn't been done because it hasn't been due yet.

Any experiences on the labour and parts cost of the cambelt from a dealer?

And in most peoples opinion thats way too long.

The car is 4 years old, certainly old enough to need a cambelt regardless of miles. The belt will degrade even if you had 10k on the clock it would still need doing

Just, want to be clear i am not disputing this. Ill get the belt done ASAP if it needs to be done but i just want to avoid paying again if it was done a year ago!

Ive got the car going into Skoda on its warranty (3rd party garage) to look at the so far yet to to work stop start so i may ask them to have a look and quote me on the belt whilst the car is in bit anyways. Could get a bargain.

Your car has a full Skoda main dealer service history.

I'd be pretty annoyed if after ringing the dealer who carried out the fourth service to hear that they hadn't changed the cambelt.

Skoda UK insist on the belt being changed at four years (on all models) regardless of mileage.

Did you buy the car from a Skoda main dealer and was it advertised as having a full service history? If so I'd be shouting holy hell if the dealer isn't able to confirm if the belt has been changed. We are talking £350 here, a not insignificant amount and one that would have needed to be negotiated into the selling price of the car.

No,  the car is from a car supermarket type place but has a 3 year warranty. I did specifically ask in the process of buuying the car the service history mentioning i wanted to make sure major service items like the cambelt had been done. Ill see what the dealer who carried out that service say although im not expecting them to tell me much more if anything than Skoda UK. If they cant then ill bring it up with the store i bought it from that the item had been skipped. This is theyre a family who own a lease company, a car megastore and a vauxhall dealership. The car megastore sells cars they take part ex from the vauxhall garage and their ex lease cars so this car is one of their ex-lease cars so they should be responsible for any omissions in the service history too!

Rang all the garages who carried out the services above. All confirmed that they had not done the cambelt so rang with Skoda UK who just said it would be offered with the 4 year service but if declined it would not form a gap in the service history. They said at 115,000 miles it must be done with no specific time limit.

So looks like i shall be getting it done next service. As its not due as per the service schedule; im covered by my warranty for now so im not overly concerned. Skoda gave me a price of £449 inc VAT for waterpump and cambelt on top of normal service charge. Another garage quoted £364.61 inc VAT for cambelt and waterpump bt im going to use discount from my old work to get decent parts and some old contacts to see how much labour can be.
