Auto dim rear view mirror ...

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Has anyone ever retro-fitted an auto-dim rear view mirror in a MKII? I'm really missing it (the MKI had one) A lot of my driving is at night, at least 60%. I'm guessing it wouldn't be cost effective and might even be tricky but if it's easy and not too painful on the wallet, I might do it.

Thanks in advance,

Rob

I would start with replacing the windshield first.

Thanks Enriquez,

Exactly as I thought, too much for too little gain. I might look into an after market clip-on tinted one (assuming they exist).

Many thanks mate,

Rob

Why replace the windscreen?

My windscreen has the sensors for auto lights/wipers but AIUI all the dimming mirror needs is a power supply and passably a different windscreen mounting bracket?

Thats getting closer ....

Thanks Gizmo ...

Surprised it wasn't on it already Rob, being an elegance spec?   Does it have the auto lights/rain sensor?

Rob’s was a UK car though and over here it’s an option.

Yeah I knew it was an imported car alright, pity such a useful option isn't offered as standard.  I find it invaluable.  As you say, once the other sensors are present it should be doable by fitting the different unit

AIUI all the sensors needed are in the mirror itself, so it should be an easy upgrade.

A rear fitted sun blind would do a similar job.

I've installed an after market auto-dimming mirror in Fabia. I do not know if the Superb has the same mounting system as the Fabia, if it does it would be very easy to do an needs an adapter to fit on to the standard mounting.

All the kit can be purchased from these guys:

***IMPORTANT***

removing the rear view mirror requires the correct technique otherwise you can break your windscreen.

Thanks to everyone for the info, very helpful.

I'll look into it properly now and post a reply if and when I get to it.

Cheers,

Rob

I spoke to a VW / Skoda main dealer yesterday and they said it wasn't easy and it would be "very" expensive to fit ...

Should be an easy and cost effective fix then.!

Thanks to everybody for the help.

I think I'll go for that Raleri mirror, €73 delivered. Why it's not standard fit I don't know.

Overall, one week and 1,000 miles into ownership, the car is brilliant.

Thanks to all,

Rob
