Cooling

Got a big big problem I need to think about here.

How do I get cold air to the engine on Subtle.

I was planning of having the intercooler etc mouted in the front but we want the car to look like a standard beetle so that counts out putting big bugger off holes in the bonnet.

The answer I have come up with puts Jason to shame in some ways.

Would putting an air scoop under the car and up into the under bonnet area solve this. I could mount fans in there too to help keep things cool.

What do the brains of briskoda think to this cunning plan or is it doomed.

Would work, but remember my also act as a scoop when going over roadkill...lol

Was gonna suggest some big 6R4/Clio V6 style side air vents, but they may stop it looking standard! :D

Nah sod it! BFOFMIC mounted right on the front bumper for all to see, and steal.

What about side pods? There's some quite big arches at the back on the beetle isn't there, so not sure if a pair of scoops, a la lambo gallardo, etc, could be built? (edit: SNAP, Chris ;) Great minds? :D)

Basically you have to get air from the front / passing air, so I'd agree that under the car would be best - just watch out for bumps ripping it off. ;)

Does your bug have the air vents behind the rear side windows? If it does you could potentially utilise/modify these to bring a small ammount of air into the engine bay.

I reckon you could add some vents to the front of the rear wings and keep it subtle enough for people to think its standard.

I think a scoop to bring air into the front of the car would work well, just make sure there is somewhere for it to get out at the top (through slots where the wipers mount)

Fans would be useful for when the car is stationary though they wouldnt be much use when on the move.

I think the biggest problem is going to be provision of enough holes to get the air out. You should have the same surface area on the exit vents as the surface area of the rad/IC. You could also vent out through the inner wings into the back of the front wheel arches.

I assume you've tried the forums over at http://www.volkszone.co.uk/ ?

Volkszone is proving quite useful at the moment.

I've got the little tiny vents behind the rear pop outs. I'm planning on having some holes in the rear window to let out some air too.

How will holes in the rear window help? surely you'd be better to prop the decklid when it gets hot?

Are you ditching/moving the rear seats?

Yep rear seats have to go so the engine and gear box fit with the deck lid shut, plus it means that the weight is slightly further forwards so it should be less tail happy.

In that case you could (thinking aloud, here) use the heater channels to bring cold air into the engine bay then vent out into the rear arches.

I assume you're going for a carpeted cover like the Clio V6 rather than leaving the engine on view like a Ferrari 360 ? The latter would obviously look very cool :D

We've not thought about the interior tbh. We are building this with the intention of sprinting it so the inside will be very sparse.

my first thought was perspex rear and rear side windows with holes in to feed and exhaust air from the engine. you could run brake ducting from the holes in the rear side windows to the engine bay and use the rear window to let the heat out.

propping the lid will obviously let ALOT of heat out.
