Blairgowrie-Braemar road conditions?

Featured Replies

Going up there this coming weekend for my cubs birthday treat, and i know they've had a fair old dumping of snow of late, so, do I need to go to the quite considerable expense of lobbing a set of winters onto my spare wheels at this late stage of the season, or is this road generally kept clear?

Any locals that can re-assure me in here, one way OR the other?

Should be fine unless more gets dropped

Tar.

I'll keep checking that.

Last went up there in 1987 and it was dead snowy, but got through ok.

Its mild here now, but due to be cold at the weekend.

If the Skiing is all go at the weekend be up the road very early if going to the Glenshee car park, and expect a long wait if going over to Braemar.

It is not late in the Season,

Lambing Snows to come yet and then some late Skiing.

Most excellent.

i don't want a 650 mile 'round trip just for sightseeing.

Awww, thanks for that George.

I shall use that link for booking the clobber now too! :sun:

Don't suppose you or anyone else can personally recommend a good farmhouse B&B up that neck of the woods too by chance, within say 10-15 miles of the ski center?

Last time I stayed in Braemar at the Fyfe Arms, but it's fully booked for Sat-Mon nights inclusive.

All a bit last minute this.

I believe they've had monster amounts of snow up there...more than Whistler in Canada apparently even. :o

Fife Arms or the Invercauld or the smaller places

Moorfield House Hotel if it is open.

Spittal Hotel Glenshee from the Blairgowrie side, at the Snow gates.

Best Apri Ski, & goods food.

You just need to find anyplace it will be very busy.

Bridge of Cally, or Kirkmichael.

Even try Blaigowrie if you are stuck.

Dont book across and past Braemar  towards Ballater or in Ballater it will take for ever to get up the hill in the morning.

Wasn't it you that found me that most most satisfactory accommodation adjacent to that woolen wear shop last November when I was marshaling on the 'Roger Albert' rally? :sun:

Are they^^ all within a reasonable distance (10-15 miles) from the Glenshee ski center do you know?

Glenisla is fine for B&B's , you just come out onto the A93.

(thats at the South side you join the road, so before you get to the Spittal of Glenshee.)

You had best get on with trying to find some place.

Caravans at Black Water/Blacklunans on the A93 possibly.

or at Bridge of Cally.

?Have you tried the Spittal Hotel, & the other Accomodation beside it?

It is the handiest and best fun.

You get up the hill quickest from there.

(I had my Honeymoon there. lol not.)

You're right. time moving on, so i did.

Glenishla now booked.

No snow at all there apparently, and it's only 25 minutes away from the center.

The snow has been on the Hills so far this winter other than a few sprinklings.

The roads & Gates are only close in Blizzard Like Conditions and a few days this year they cleared the hill.

Night time the Gates Close only were they must for safety to keep plonkers out of trouble.

If there is Big Snow up the Centre, first the Car Parks need cleared, then the gates get open

But its not that weather now. Its Spring Like.

Glenisla is lovely.

When Lambing Snows come it will change, but that is not forecast yet.

I am 40 minutes away, & i go via Kirriemuir & Glenisla.

and also i can go out my door and look at the Angus Glens 15 miles away, covered in snow.

Be sure you are out the junction from Glenisla B951

& on the A93 by 8.30 am at the very latest.

http://sabre-roads.org.uk/wiki/index.php?title=b951

The B&B will know that, so an early Breakfast.

& take food up the Hill, there is hot food but expensive.

Queuing for Parking, Queuing for Hire if getting it on the Hill, Queuing for Tickets, Queuing for Lifts

& Queuing for Toilets or food.

Scottish Skiing is great, and when at its best you need to Queue.

Or go mid week.

You...and our George...are top geezers.

You should both set up your own accommodation advisory service.

I could have spent hours trawling the many pages of holiday accommodation web sites, and ended up banging my head against the wall in frustration. :wall:

The extremely pleasant owner has also pointed me in the direction of the Strathmore Golf Club for an evening meal on Saturday for me and my birthday Bear cub,  as she can't accommodate on that evening, and also an alternative to the Glenshee Ski Hire Center to avoid all the ques on Sunday morning.

I'm well chuffed with arrangements so far, and just hope the weather doesn't turn nasty enough to close the slopes, as it did on a couple of occasions back on my last full weeks visit in '87.

Thanks again lads. You've been extremely helpful.

Have fun and i will come recover you if any problems.

It should be a good weekend.

The Strathmore Golf Club was built and owned by the Glenshee Ski Centre back a few years ago,

no idea if they still have it.

You have much to see and do obviously,

but please do not miss stopping into the Spittal Hotel coming back down from the Skiing.

& look above the fireplace at the Candle Holders and read the story.

Nice Food & Drink.  & I think you will like the place.

Travel and stay around Scotland on business and have a lot of contacts in rural areas. Always happy to help a fellow briskodian.

On your recommendation then, we will.

Luv old places with a bit of history.

Is it on the main road back to the B&B then I presume?

Flamin Nora!

Just clicked on the web site for it that you posted earlier, and what's in the foreground?

One of the coaches I used to drive for Hardings Tours in Liverpool!! :o

Off the hill, all the views, do not crash,  through the snow gates, ready to indicate right,

take care

Right turn,  take care, (Old Dundee Ski Club on you right.)

Over the Hump Back Bridge,  exciting, passengers will love it.

find a parking place,

http://spittalofglenshee.co.uk

*I will refrain from posting the pictures of coming off the hill,

just wonderful as the sun sets going down to the Spittal.*

No she won't! :D

Am I too assume that you live fairly close to all this beauty then?

Think it would possibly cure my terminal and chronic grumpiness if i did tbh.

Off to bed, there tomorrow.

 Never fails to thrill me.

Not my video.

POTHOLES! PORHOLES! POTHOLES!  BEWARE.

Sorry!, We need snow.

There is a big thaw on and the temperature is too high.

The Snow has had a big shift, there is snow & skiing but a wet mess.

This morning there was some wet snow blowing then drizzle and at road level the temp was about 1.5*oC.

I took some pics just of the road and carpark.  The big problem in the Potholes that have opened on the A93 & the Glenisla road, especially 150 meters into the Glenisla roads.

Repairs are being done, but they will open up as soon as there is a freeze and thaw, which is every night just now.

Sorry, but that is what Scotland can be like. 'Midweek' & Weekend.

At least they get a chance to fix thing before the weekend.

Hopefully plenty of snow to come.

You changed your user name since last week?

Potholes indeed. Dreadful, but at least understandable up there with the ice/snow/water constantly battering the surface.

Snow excellent. Resort very busy on Sunday, but complete opposite on Monday. Sheer bliss with stunning weather to match.

Accommodation ok, so thanks for that.

Probably the best bit was the awesome clear sky on Monday night in a light pollution free zone.

Never seen a sky like it.

Beautifully quiet roads at night time too. Went to Blairgowrie for a meal, or that's what we were hoping for.

Don't they have restaurants up there?

Found one, but they apparently stop serving after 8.30, and directed us to Wetherspoons

Just a shame it's such a long drag up there, and gets my goat as to just how expensive a short trip up there has cost.

Just as a footnote, I didn't see a single vRS of either model apart from a silver Fabia in the car park on Sunday, and only a couple of non vRS mk2 Fabias and a gaggle of Octavia s in a total in over 800 miles of driving.

Amazing.
