Rear wheel bearings

Featured Replies

Hi guys

Apologies if this has already been covered but i cannot seem to find this on the forum.

I believe my rear bearings are on the way out as i am getting a dreadful droning sound from them. They have done about 60k miles. I have not jacked it up to check for any play in them yet but the road noise is gradually getting worse

I have a mkII vrs 57 year.

I would like various bits of info.

Is there any online guide i can follow for the change?

Is it best to just get a bearing kit or can i replace the hub?

Any special tool needed?

Any links to reasonably priced part companies for hub / bearing kits?

Thanks in advance :)

Have you searched the site for Rear wheel sawtoothing? More common than failed bearings.

I've had both rear hub replaced due to rusted sensor rings rather than a fault with the bearing. I just got the OEM parts since they're covered by a 2yr warranty. Not cheap though, £120 a side.

Yes i red the posts on that but i cannot see anything on the tyres.

The noise seems too similar to me not to be bearings.

Did you fit the bearings yourself?

No got an Indy to do it.

If you are getting the hub done think about getting the stone guard changed at the same time. They're aluminium and rot at the bolts. They're only £20 each but a hub off job to change and they make a hellish noise when they go.

you will also need an m18 spline bolt tool as went to get mine done fitter had vag kit which only went to a m16 tool.

I had, (still have) a noise similar noise on my rear wheels (2005 2lt diesel). Would have sworn it is wheel bearings, but got them checked out by local garage who could not find any problems...and suggests it could be tyres?....they are winter tyres and have been on for 2 years, but still some tread left. Noise is not ghetting any worse, and been like it now for about 8 months!...actual noise very dependent on road surface..
