Featured Replies

Hi all i have just put an order in for some new products to try from cleanyourcar.com

I got some collinite 476s wax to try never used this before but i have heard its good from this forum.

I am used to autoglym hd wax but i thought id try this for a change and it cheaper.

I got blit hamber auto clay medium never tried this before i,m interested to see how this will work as you only need to use water is this correct? And is the medium ok for a 1 year old car?

I also bought some sonax bsd again never used it but i hear its good from this forum.

I got some new micro fibre cloths as well eurow shag pile double density towles anyone had these before?

So the plan is wash the car clay the car then i,ll put some autoglym srp on then the collinite on top,

Then to finish it off i,ll put on some sonax.then every other weel i,ll wash and sonax.

How do you apply sonax when the car is wet or dry and when do you buff it of straight away or leave to bond for some time? Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions

Regards the clay Medium should be fine but I would question if you really need to clay a nearly new car? especially if you have been using Autoglym hd wax to protect the paint. The litmus test is if you run your fingers over the paint when its been washed and you can feel tiny imperfections like deposits then clay is a good starting point its a bit like blue tack I don't think it has any cut so shouldn't scratch the paint although if you drop it throw it away don't continue to use it. I use it with water and it starts to grab at the surface if there are dry patches so it put some water in a atomiser bottle and spray as I go doing small patches at a time keep wiping your finger tips over the surface it should start to feel silky smooth where its been applied. No need to press hard the weight of your hand and the clay is usually enough to shape the clay to the surface of the panel. Keep folding the clay to reveal clean areas so the dirt picked up is always folded into the centre of the clay. Not used Sonax yet so can't help there.

a drop of car shampoo in with the water will helps things no end and I haven't noticed it breaking down the clay IME. Use your sprayer very liberally.  Go via feel and touch as you work, surface should transition from a very slight grabby feel, but not much as you are lubing, but then change to being like a hockey puck on ice with virtually no resistance.  Keep the clay warm and flexible using some hot water, keep folding the clay as the surface being used picks up contamination.  Maybe google Mike Phillips or Junkman to watch one of their video guides.

As above, only clay if needed and if you intend to polish afterwards, even with perfect technique it is still possible to marr the paint, this isn't a problem as it is the smallest amount of surface marring that is caused which would even be removed by SRP by hand but it needs to be taken into account.

Clay gets talked about a lot and it's great for doing what it does, but I worry that in a lot of cases it's used more as a chance for people to say "I clay my car, therefore I know what I'm doing" but in reality even those of us with total OCD are probably claying 1-2-3 times a year at most.

Also before I clay I always prefer to give the car a chemical decon first using fallout remover and tar remover, this means the clay has less work to do, you need to use less and I feel it should make things a little safer for the paint.

As scribbler says a protected car should also pick up a lot less contamination, wash the car and really asses whether you need to do this.  Not saying you don't, plenty of new cars are delivered in really rather poor condition, just check.

Just to reiterate what Sparkly said.......+....... Use plenty of soapy water.....and I mean plenty or you will induce marring
