Track Day Tyres

Featured Replies

I'm tempted to try a track day sometime this year & I'm wondering what do to about tyres.......

In a couple of months I'll have a set of Conti Sport Contact 2's with about 3 mm of tread left, still legal but

too noisy for me for general road use. (Replaced with GoodyearEfficientGrips,)

Would it make sense to use these Conti's rather than the Goodyears, or should I buy something different?

I'm not going to get too serious,it's the wrong car for the job but I have trundled around a few circuits on normal tyres

& I doubt if I'm going to be driving fast enough to over-stress normal road tyres, just concerned if 3mm tread depth is enough.,

TIA for any advice, David C.

If you are serious about track tyres, buy federal 595RS-R, or Kuhmo V700.  If however you just want a decent tyre to use on track, then a fairly well worn decent road tyre is a good shout as there is less tread wobble possible, compared to a new tyre,

When it comes to a track tyre, 0mm is good!  :D

As Jason said, unless you are committed and going for lap times I wouldn't bother spending the money on track tyres.

Half decent road ones will be fine, even better if they are used.

On new(ish) tyres the tread blocks move around and cause the tyre to overhead when causes quite a bit of damage/wear.

If you have some 3mm used road tyres they are perfect.

Unless you really care about being 1 or 2 seconds faster per lap.

All the Brisokda track sessions I've done so far in the Yeti have been on the stock factory tyres and it's been fine for a bit of fun.

Thanks gents for you v. useful info.

I get Richards point re. squirming tread blocks, I did wonder if there was a minimum tread depth other than the 1.6 mm for road-legal tyres.

Thanks Again, DC.

For most trackdays, as long as not a full slick any tread depth is fine. It's a good way to finish off borderline rubber. ;)
