Passenger door won't open

Featured Replies

I have an issue with my rear passenger door. It won't open from the outside. The handle pulls but it doesn't open. I can't open from the inside as it has a child lock enabled. The lock works ok, but I'm guessing it is the handle?

Any ideas what I can do?

Anyone got any ideas? Tried pushing from inside with the window down...

I see this has happened to mk1's with a problem with the deadlock. Looks like a trip to the garage then. Tried pulling door whilst pressing the unlock but no joy.

Do your rear Windows work

With ours it was the window motor on the side that works not open.

Good luck

Gary

That's would not open.

It's manual windows.

Won't be that then.

It is possible to remove the door card with the door closed without damaging it.

Takes a while though so expect a high labour charge

One thing worth a try - repeatedly tapping/hitting the door on the outside around where the lock mechanism is (use your hammer fist or a rubber mallet) whilst at the same time continually doing lock/unlock on the central locking, this can sometimes help free the mechanism if it's sticky

Me and hammers are a bit like Jeremy clarkson with a hammer....

I will see if I can get a rubber mallet. If not it will be a trip to a garage. An Indy would be cheaper I'm guessing labour wise?

Could just be a slipped cable. The handles look the same as my mk4 golf which have plastic ends on the cable to the door handle. Over time the cable stretches and the plastic end needs moving within the handle. There isn't a lot that holds them in and can slip. If you pull the handle, you may be able to see the channel the ends sit in. Door card removal is possible, but is a pain and has a fairly high chance of damaging the door card. Could be the locking module as suggested, can you hear the door actually unlock?

If you open the window, surely it would be more fun for rear passegers to jump in Dukes of Hazzard style!?

Yeah you can hear the door unlock/lock, but have noticed the handle gets stuck whilst pulling it out.

Booked in to Grey Gables now. They are charging me £75ish an hour labour.

Does that sound right? They couldn't tell me how long it work take...but to take the door panel off, it's going to be at least two hours I reckon.

75 per hour I would say is about bang in the middle between cheapest back street garage and most expensive main dealer prices. How long depends if they can do something similar to my trick and "pop" the door open, if they get the door open quick then door card off is quick and easy. However, if they then need to access the lock mechanism, the inner door panel is riveted on, these need drilling out and would be a longer job

Hats off to Grey Gables. Superb. Cable had come off in the handle, took them an hour. Service also done. Total cost £200. Free courtesy car.

They didn't have time to wash it, which is good as I didn't really want it doing anyway, and they chucked in a free black Octavia toy for my little girl.
